1 In 5 Children Take MP3 Players to School

Recent figures show that around 1 in 5 children pack mp3 players in their school bags as essential items to help get them through the day. The figures have been released by retail giant John Lewis and show that while traditional items like pens and pencils are still there they have been joined by an ever increasing list of digital items and gadgets. The average school kit now contains items worth £550.80 with the most commonly found item being the smartphone.

45% of children take a smartphone with them to school while 35% take headphones. The average cost of the phone is £362. 50 of school children take a tablet PC and 1 in 50 take an e-reader device, like the Kindle Fire. With access to such a wide range of devices available, kids would be able to pack their bags with an e-reader or tablet and leave the heavy books at home. However, there are also those devices with a less academic purpose that are increasingly finding their way into the school bag.

Nearly 1 in 5 children take mp3 players to school. MP3 players are small and convenient to move and store, and this means that music loving children now have the opportunity to take their music collection with them. There are devices from a number of manufacturers and, as well as playing music, some of the more advanced devices allow access to apps and games too. The cost of these devices can vary greatly.

Basic mp3 players can cost as little as £20. These devices will hold hundreds, or even thousands of songs, and flash based devices do not have any moving parts. This means that jolting them around in the school bag or the school blazer will not cause damage. Whereas portable CD players were inconvenient because of their tendency to jump and skip, this is not a problem with the mp3 players of today.

The Apple iPod is one of the most popular of all mp3 players. It comes in a number of variants from the diminutive iPod Nano to the hard drive based 160GB iPod Classic. Owners can amass their digital music collection by purchasing songs directly through iTunes and the devices with the most hard drive space can store tens of thousands of songs; equivalent to thousands of entire albums. Devices like the iPod Touch also offer the ability to play games, watch video, and stream many other types of content.

The typical school bag has changed considerably over the years and John Lewis head of buying for communications technology, Matt Leeser said that the school bag will continue to change and will become virtually unrecognisable in ten years' time. MP3 players, along with tablet PCs and smartphones, have already made the move into the top ten list and have increased the average cost of uniform and school bag content from the equivalent of £252.40 in the 1980s to £550.80. This means that parents are spending nearly twice the amount on school stuff than they were 30 years ago.
