14th Anniversary Embracing Precaution

California Safe Schools Celebrates Mother Earth & Local Heroes

On Friday, at historic 100 year old Euclid Elementary , in their picturesque native garden, California Safe Schools (CSS), a national children's environmental health and justice coalition, honored Mother Earth and local heroes.

Honorees included:

Los Angeles Unified School District (Environmental Health Innovator Award) for the 14th Anniversary of their groundbreaking pesticide policy. The groundbreaking policy called Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was the first policy in the nation to embrace the Precautionary Principle & Right to Know. Today, the policy has become a national and international model for school districts and communities.

Dr. Cathie Ann Lippman (2013 Environmental Health Champion) who for more than 30 years through her highly respected preventive medical practice, and innovative educational presentations, has been a champion in protecting human health and the environment.

Maryhelen Torres, Principal, of Euclid Elementary (2013 Distinguished Leadership Award) for her tireless dedication and advocacy for children. Maryellen Torres efforts protect, support, and inspire children to turn their dreams into reality.

Luisa Leschin, Actress Writer, Producer & Co-founder of the highly successful comedy troupe "Latins Anonymous." (2013 Above & Beyond Award) for her pioneering and exceptional artistic efforts for stage, television, and film.

Legendary, Bob Baker of Bob Baker Marionettes (2013 Visionary Award) whose amazing creativity, and enchanting puppet shows have entertained thousands of children for eighty-one years.

The program began with eloquent presentations by gifted Euclid Elementary students Jaime Flores, Jose Sanchez, Mark Carrillo and Sarah Ruelas followed by Mr. Arzate's 3rd grade class poem about actions we can take to improve our environment. A delightful performance by Ms. Ojeda's kindergarten students dressed as singing and dancing trees brought extended audience applause.

Carlos Hernandez, from the office of California Speaker of the House, John Perez, and Rocio Hernandez of the office of Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huizar, made special presentations to Maryhelen Torres, Principal of Euclid Elementary and Robina Suwol of California Safe Schools.

Special recognition and awards were also presented to Los Angeles Unified School District's Jennifer Flores, Ronald Hults and Terry Robinson for their notable work and commitment in implementing the school districts successful Integrated Pest Management Policy.

Additional Commendations were awarded by the office of Congressman Tony Cardenas, and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control to the honorees.

The event concluded with a lovely garden reception surrounded by imaginative artistic displays designed by Susy Cusme.

"It was an enormous honor to be a guest of Euclid Elementary, a school that is filled with such love of learning, and respect for the environment. Under the leadership of Principal Maryhelen Torres, and the amazing teachers, staff, and dedicated parents, there is no doubt that Euclid students are destined for greatness, just like the heroes we celebrated today!" , added Robina Suwol, founder and executive director of California Safe Schools.
