16 Year-Old Female Tech Founder and CEO Launches Social Media Platform MemeStream, the Pop Culture App for Our Time

MemeStream announces the launch of its social media app, founded by Sophia Latessa, 16-year-old CEO and tech entrepreneur. MemeStream is a social content platform that allows users to communicate back and forth through the cultural phenomenon of memes.

Latessa was 15 when she started the Los Angeles based startup. She now manages a team of six and oversees every aspect of the company. She fits in her conference calls and team meetings before school and during lunch. As a young Native American woman in tech who codes, she hopes to inspire other young women from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Memes are important in today's world because they spread culture and patterns of behavior across borders much faster than was possible in the past.

MemeStream is a lot more than a simple meme generator or feed. The app allows users to scroll through multiple captions for every meme, create their own take on viral favorites, and make entirely new ones themselves. The platform caters to Generation Z, digital natives looking to connect with their peers and take part in making change.

“The popularity of memes today is indicative of the speed of our global age,” says MemeStream founder Latessa. “Memes are important in today’s world because they spread culture and patterns of behavior across borders much faster than was possible in the past. My hope is that users, by being plugged and connected, will foster a sense of activism.”

Sophia first thought of the idea because the memes she was sharing with friends were disaggregated across the internet. After approaching her father with the idea, she was told to forget it and concentrate on her studies. Undeterred, she raised the capital by reaching out to investors.

Memes are not a fad, Latessa says. “They are an essential way to communicate ideas and culture. No matter your location in the world, certain memes are recognizable, and technology has allowed this to happen. MemeStream will facilitate this global conversation further.”

MemeStream is available for free for iOS in the App Store. For more visit www.memestreamapp.com
