The latest release of the MacBook Air has heralded a number of changes to the already popular, ultra-portable device. There are again two sizes of screen that consumers can opt for, the 11" and the bigger and only slightly more expensive 13" variant. Both have the option of a 128GB or 256GB solid state drive, with no hard drive option, and all four of the variants have a number of changes and upgrades under the hood to help ensure that these are among the most powerful and popular devices available.

In terms of design, little or nothing has really changed. There's an additional microphone which is used to cancel out noise during video calling and dictation but other than this, new owners may be a little disappointed that they will won't automatically be able to show off the fact that they have the very latest tech with them. However, it also means that the MacBook Air carries the same attractive and stylish look that it has become renowned for.

Most of the differences that are found in the new MacBook Air models are down to the new processor, although not all. The Air now uses Haswell based fourth generation Intel processors. The i5 core is installed as standard but it is possible to customise the installation to an i7 based device. In actual fact, the 1.3GHz i5 has less clock speed than the 1.8GHz used in the last model and both are dual core. The performance changes are actually minimal, though, with some functions actually being performed quicker and better with the new processor.

One of the big benefits of the Haswell processor is that it consumes a lot less power than the older processors. While there may be less in the way of pure processor speed, this means that it is possible to eek between 10 and 12 hours of usage from a single charge of the battery while a MacBook Air in standby or sleep mode will stay that way for a month without needing to be recharged.

Another big improvement comes in the speed of the solid state drives that are used in place of hard drives. This does mean that the numbers aren't as impressive as some may be looking for but there are some very obvious and very real benefits to the use of this technology. So called flash storage does not have moving or working parts so even users that lug their Air around in a backpack should not be able to damage or destroy their storage. What's more, it is virtually instantly accessible so everything will happen quicker from starting up the Air to opening up applications and software.

There are many reasons why the MacBook Air has become so popular and so sought after. It is incredibly light and small making it a very convenient option for people on the go. With the new processors, vastly improved battery life, and even quicker SSD storage the latest model has seemingly got even better.
