31 Designers Join Project White T-Shirt to Reinvent a Fashion Classic

Los Angeles, December 11-Announcing Project White T-Shirt, a charitable project that has enlisted 31 designers from 13 countries to redefine the iconic white t-shirt. Each designer has deconstructed and recreated the white t-shirt as we know it. An online gallery launched at www.projectwhitetshirt.com exhibits previews of the pieces each week, with the Project culminating in an online auction. Bidders will have an opportunity to own the one-of-a-kind pieces and contribute to Designers Against AIDS-the Belgium-based organization that will receive all proceeds from the auction.

Participating designers include a mix of well-known international talents such as Bruno Pieters, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, and Kostas Murkudis, as well as experimental designers Complex Geometries, Daniel Palillo, and Siv Støldal. Some chose to reconstruct the t-shirt into a tent, a curtain, or a pillow, while others abandoned cotton fabric entirely and created t-shirts from marshmallows and ropes.

Project White T-Shirt is curated by Triple-Major, a creative studio based in Hong Kong and Los Angeles that aims to reinvent popular culture by collaborating with artists to rethink classic icons. The online gallery at www.projectwhitetshirt.com allows viewers to see the designs and watch video interviews with the designers to explore their creative processes.

The exhibition will open in Los Angeles's innovative store-gallery, Welcome Hunters, on December 19th. A key component of LA's fashion scene, Welcome Hunters is the perfect aesthetic fit for the Project's creative, artistic pieces. The store will be transformed into a simulated laundromat, with the designs strung on clotheslines, in laundry baskets, on washing machines, and suspended from the ceiling. Following Welcome Hunters, the exhibition will move to other galleries and stores world-wide, including Space 15 Twenty in Hollywood, CA and Gallery de Vie in Hong Kong.

"The fashion industry has been dominated by consumerism and monotonous design, so people are looking for something new," explains director Ritchie Chan. "This is not a t-shirt design contest. We want to use the most basic article of clothing-the white t-shirt-as a way to revolutionize fashion and inspire creative talents to express fashion in completely new ways."

The auction begins online at www.projectwhitetshirt.com on December 19, concurrent with the opening reception at Welcome Hunters.
