3D Web Gathers Pace

GEMSTA.com, the new 3D website launched in October last year, is reporting a dramatic increase in traffic as its innovative approach to internet browsing gathers pace.

Chief Executive of Gemsta Ltd, Richard Laing, comments: "We believe that the future of the internet is going to be all about increased interactivity and more immersive 3D environments. The current generation of users have been brought up on Playstation and more recently watching the record breaking 3D movie Avatar. Internet users want more than just a glorified telephone directory from the internet. With increasing bandwidth and processing capacity the move towards sites like GEMSTA.com (www.gemsta.com) is inevitable - it makes the old web look like Black & White TV," he continues.

3D visualisation is already being used by brands in a small way to help online consumers with product familiarisation: current examples include the new BlackBerry Curve smartphone which uses a 360 visualisation for online customers (http://uk.blackberry.com/devices/blackberrycurve8900/curve_360.jsp). Many airline websites are able to show potential customers a virtual Business Class interior and car manufacturers allow potential buyers to build their own virtual cars - Gemsta has collected them together in the new 3D Car Configurator area (http://explore.gemsta.com/cars/index.html). This is likely to be just the tip of the iceberg and the technology developed by Gemsta will allow this type of format to be taken to an entirely different level.

"The technology we use to create our computer generated environments is similar to that used in 3D films such as Avatar and we are currently looking into the feasibility of bringing that type of 3D experience to GEMSTA.com - we really are only one step away from a truly 3D Web," explains James Rees, Technical Director, Gemsta.

Jonathan Franklin, Managing Director, Gemsta says: "Our ambition to build the largest ever Flash model accessible online has been realised. This massive 30 square mile 3D photo real computer generated model is now home to an ever increasing range of great new features like the innovative MultiSearch function (http://search.gemsta.com) , which speeds up searching by allowing users to generate multiple search results from up to 16 different providers with the click of just one button," explains Jonathan.

To date most of the 3D environment within GEMSTA.com has been dedicated to shopping since it was the major retailers who first recognised the advantages of immersing visitors in a more interactive environment. In future an increasing amount of multi-media content will be added: "You can already take an animated trip through Gemsta on a virtual Harley Davidson and watch DVD trailers in a virtual cinema," comments James Rees, Gemsta's Technical Director, "we could even host events like rock concerts or even sports fixtures from within our virtual stadiums - it's all technically possible but we haven't yet got around to speaking with Lady Ga Ga!" he continues.
