5th Year Senior at UMD uses Rap Album to Reflect on his Time in College and What is Yet to Come
Online, February 15, 2010 (Newswire.com) - College Park- Everyone has to graduate sometime. For the University of Maryland accounting major, Eddie Smotkin, 23, this is his final year. After prolonging his fantasy life in college one year longer, Eddie finally came to terms with the fact that this was it. In an effort to cherish and share these memories, Eddie Smotkin released his debut hip-hop album appropriately named, "5th Year Senior" on August 25, 2009.
The album features 15 studio quality tracks produced by Eddie's childhood friend and fellow 5th year senior Teddy Bloomquist. Two college-induced songs from the album were Purevolume.com unsigned artist chart toppers within days of being released. These songs included the laidback day drinking anthem, "Abe Lincoln," containing a sample of the classic Pixies song, "Where is my Mind" as well as the album titled, ode to college, "5th Year Senior." Other notable tracks that appear on this album and have also received high ratings on Purevolume.com are the songs, "I'm Stressing," a song about Eddie's regrets of past relationships during his college career and "Music Man" which features another talented amateur artist and college student named Capri hailing from Hempstead, NY.
Elizabethany, owner and journalist of the prominent Real World DC blog, Loveelizabethany.com which is often featured on Hot 99.5's Kane Morning Show, recently did an interview with Eddie after being surprisingly impressed with his rap skills while reviewing his album "5th Year Senior." In the interview Elizabethany told Eddie, "Local artists, I'll listen to 10 seconds and then I'm over it," but when it came to Eddie's album she admited, "I legitimately listen to the whole entire thing all the way through."
Since the album's release in August, Eddie has been thinking about his future. However, unlike some of his fellow college peers Eddie is only thinking as far as next summer. Eddie and his rhyming named producer Teddy are back in action, planning to release another full-length album around the same time next year. Just recently, Eddie was featured on the official remix of the song, "Make This Count" by the alternative pop band, Boys Will Be Boys who also attend UMD.
