71% of Job Seekers Experience Stress Prior to Interviews, Study Finds

LaSalle Network, National Staffing and Recruiting Firm, Conducts Survey on Job Interview Stress

April is Stress Awareness Month, and LaSalle Network, a national staffing and recruiting firm, surveyed nearly 600 people on stress associated with the job interview process. When asked if they got nervous prior to a job interview, 71 percent of respondents stated yes.

When asked to choose what about the interview they feared most, 59 percent of respondents stated, “saying the wrong thing,” 50 percent stated “making a bad first impression,” and 39 percent stated “showing up late.” Other reasons included “selling myself” (38 percent) and “being unprepared” (34 percent). For this question, respondents were able to choose multiple responses.

When asked how prepared they felt prior to an interview, respondents stated:

 

Perfectly Prepared – 56 percent

Underprepared – 28 percent

Over-prepared – 16 percent

 

When asked how much time they spent preparing for an interview, respondents stated:

2-3 hours – 46 percent

0-1 hours – 23 percent

4-5 hours – 20 percent

6+ hours – 11 percent

When asked what they do to prepare for an interview, respondents stated the following (respondents were able to check all that apply):

Look at the company website – 98 percent

Review company’s social media (Yelp, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.) – 67 percent

Talk to current employees – 23 percent

 

Of the above, when asked which was helpful, respondents stated:

Company website – 87 percent

Company’s social media – 52 percent

Talk to current employees – 49 percent

 

When asked which social media channel is most helpful for preparing for an job interview, respondents stated the following:

LinkedIn – 82 percent

Glassdoor – 68 percent

Facebook – 53 percent

Yelp – 37 percent

Twitter – 31 percent

Instagram – 16 percent
