75% of 9.9 SoC Students Say They Are Interning At One Of Their Top 3 Media Houses

The journalism careers of students from 9.9 School of Communication are off to a flying start after they secured internships at top local and international media houses.

SoC's "Class of 2013" have begun their intensive 3-month internships at prestigious news organisations such as The New York Times, Hindustan Times, Agence France-Presse (AFP), CNN-IBN and ET Now.

The placements led 75% of the batch to respond to a survey saying they are interning at a media house ranked in their personal Top 3.

The 9.9 School of Communication, formerly the 9.9 School of Convergence, is different from other J-schools schools due to its wealth of state-of-the-art technology and small class sizes. It also has a large proportion of faculty from overseas, as well as teachers who are working reporters, or reporters who have recently taken a sabbatical from the media.

SoC's internship program is also unique, following the US model where students undertake a 3-month internship while continuing to attend classes and lectures on Saturdays so that they remain guided during the first steps along their career paths.

Dean, Dr. Eric Saranovitz, said SoC had been able to secure the coveted internships due to the high standard of the students and its faculty's excellent media network.

"SoC students receive very hands-on training, as well as a strong theoretical grounding, so they finish classwork component of the course job-ready," he said.

"In tandem, the faculty at the school have a strong network in the country's top media houses, which they can tap into for this hands-on component of the course."

Other media houses that have taken SoC students include TV stations CNN-IBN and NewsX (three interns); newswire, ANI; magazines, Prevention (India Today group), Atelier and top tech journal, Digit; and an outlet specialising in investigative journalism (two interns).

The school also runs a Digital Media Communication (DMC) course - the country's first - alongside the journalism course. Its students are interning at high-profile media and technology houses like Samsung, Gizmodo and Hungama.

Students have already made headlines, their stories having appeared in print, online or on air. Some of the bylines include The New York Times, Digit and Atelier.

SoC this month conducted a survey of students and learnt:

75% agreed they got into one of their Top 3 choices of media house
40% rated the SoC journalism/DMC course 9 out of 10; 35% an 8/10 and 20% a 7/10
80% agreed they were happy with their choice of school, with 30% of them strongly agreeing.

Student, Gargi Singh, said the faculty at SoC had been very committed to placing students in highly reputed organisations. "I got placed at AFP for my internship and it has been a very good learning experience," she said.

Fellow student, Sucharita Sen, now interning at ANI said: "The internship process here is undoubtedly interesting and gives a lot of exposure into the real media world and what an employer in a media firm is looking for in an intern in his company."

More student comment on internships:

Vishnu Varma: "The New York Times, without a doubt, is one of the Top 3 media houses and I am privileged to have got an opportunity to work there."

Akansha Srivastava: "I so badly wanted to get through ET Now and finally I am interning there."

Tanya Krishna: "I wanted Headlines Today as my first internship place. I just love the way they work and am still loving the working atmosphere and my seniors in there. The recent TRP ratings tells that Headlines Today is on number 3, so I am loving it."

The school is also receiving good feedback from internship supervisors at the various media houses, with editors commenting that SoC interns are above-average.
