79-Year-Old Grandma and Stage 4 Cancer Survivor Dances on the Catwalk During New York Fashion Week
Gale Schneider, a Stage 4 Breast Cancer Survivor and Grandma, Modeled at SMGlobal Catwalk During New York Fashion Week for Say YES to HOPE
NEW YORK, February 21, 2019 (Newswire.com) - Gale Schneider is living fully in spite of stage 4 breast cancer, and she shared her joy during New York Fashion Week while modeling at SMGlobal Catwalk for Say YES to HOPE. She left her cancer behind as she took her place on the runway.
Her courage on this 20-year journey has been steadfast as she has endured both IV and oral chemotherapy, many hormone blockers, radiation, radiation burns, a stem cell transplant, spots surgically removed from her liver, SIR-Spheres microspheres to her liver tumors and, most recently, cryoablation that froze three spots on her liver.
Gale's amazing doctor Mohammed Bilal, MD, who is head of vascular and interventional radiology at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital, and Katie Egner, physician assistant of interventional radiology, were in the audience to cheer her on. Katie said, "It was an evening that represented incredible hope, love, and strength and was an inspiration to all that were fortunate enough to attend." Both agreed that it re-validated the work that they do. Dr. Bilal shares, "To see outcomes like that and then to witness the patient enjoying such a special moment in her life makes everything clear as to why the work we do is so important. It was an honor for us to be a part of the night."
Making the evening even more amazing was the fact that Gale was escorted down the runway by her four grandsons and on the return walk, they all broke into a dance. The joy and enthusiasm were contagious and had the audience on their feet.
Together, YES, SMGlobal Catwalk, the designers, Gale, and the other patients are making a difference in the fight against a cancer that is not often discussed. The "Surviving in Fashion” showcase is a beautiful tribute to cancer patients and a wonderful way to witness fashion and philanthropy meet. Modeling the wonderful designs gives these patients a chance to shine, to be pampered and to escape the ravages of treatment while sharing time with others that have a similar diagnosis.
“We are so appreciative that Samina Mughal has given us the chance to not only share our message with the fashion industry but to give us a once-in-a-lifetime experience on the runway,” said Suzanne Lindley, co-founder of YES who herself is living with terminal cancer. “Bringing awareness to the fact that we are living with cancer, and not dying from it, is a huge opportunity.”
