9/11 First Responder to Appear at Honoring the Animals

Chance's Spot, Pet Loss and Support Resources, welcomes 9/11 First Resonder, Danny Hopper, to the 5th Annual Honoring the Animals, Candlelight Vigil and Animal Blessing.

Chance's Spot, Pet Loss and Support Resources, will hold its 5th Annual Honoring the Animals, Candlelight Vigil and Animal Blessing on Sunday, September 11, 2011 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2233 Woodbourne Ave., Louisville, Kentucky, in observance of National Pet Memorial Day.

This year, Danny Hopper, a Tennessee Task Force One, K-9 Search and Rescue Handler and FEMA member will be the guest speaker. Mr. Hopper, along with his partner, K-9 Heidi were first responders at the September 11, 2001 Pentagon terrorist attack. He will share his first-hand account of experience of that national tragedy as well as talk about the role of the search and rescue dogs.

Also appearing will be the new Louisville Metro Animal Services Director, Justin Scally. Mr. Scally will be presenting a proclamation from Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer declaring September 11, 2011 National Pet Memorial Day.

"This year we are grateful, not only to have a FEMA first responder to the 9/11 attacks help us celebrate our animal heroes, but also to have the new LMAS director and Mayor Fischer recognize that companion animals are more than 'just pets.'" said Gail Heller, Chance's Spot founder. "We welcome them to Honoring the Animals as we provide comfort, closure, and celebration of life to those who have had to say goodbye to a beloved animal companion."

This event is free and those in attendance will be able to have their pet's name read out loud during the vigil. There will be light hors d'oeuvres, musical selections and poetry-reading, as well as a moment of silence as candles are lit in memory of our beloved animal friends. After the vigil there will be a blessing of the animals for those who bring their leashed pets. Further details on the service are available at the Honoring the Animals web site at: www.honoringtheanimals.org.
