A Breakthrough in Vision Quality for Cataract Patients
Advanced Blended Vision Procedure Presented at National Convention of Cataract Surgeons
Dr. Kenneth Lipstock Featured Speaker
During the weekend of March 25, 2011 Dr. Kenneth Lipstock, owner of Lipstock LASIK and Cataract Center in Richmond, Virginia, was the featured speaker in several highly publicized sessions at the annual convention of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) held in San Diego. With almost 10,000 medical professionals in attendance, ASCRS is the largest collection of cataract surgeons in the world, many of whom marveled at Dr. Lipstock's amazing results.
What Is A Cataract? A Cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of the human eye. Virtually everyone will have a cataract at some point in their life, usually beginning when one reaches their sixties, but in some cases earlier. The symptoms of a cataract are gradual; early on one may notice glare at night and then increasing blurriness. Eventually, the growth of a cataract clouds one's vision enough that everyday activities become difficult to perform.
Traditional Solutions for Cataracts Years ago, patients waited until their vision was extremely blurry before having cataract surgery. Over the years, cataract surgery has become one of the most successful surgeries performed with increased safety and convenience for patients. Now cataract surgery is commonly performed as an out-patient procedure at the early onset of problems. This surgery involves replacing the eye's natural lens with an artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL), and the procedure is surprisingly fast with minimal discomfort.
Intraocular Lenses
There are currently two types of IOLs available. One type called a monofocal IOL provides good vision at distance but requires the use of reading glasses or bifocals for good mid-range and close up vision. The second type of IOL is referred to as a "Premium" IOL. There are several models of Premium IOLs, each enabling both distance and near vision with less dependence on glasses. A few drawbacks to the use of Premium IOLs is the fact that most health insurance carriers will not cover the additional cost and a small but significant number of patients experience severe night vision problems.
Dr. Lipstock's Breakthrough
Dr. Lipstock's research has shown that a cataract surgery technique known as Blended Vision costs only slightly more than traditional cataract surgery but provides results equivalent to or better than Premium IOLs. Blended Vision provides patients with good to excellent vision at all three ranges: close up, mid-range and distant.
"I have just not been happy with the results achieved by surgeons using Premium IOLs and I think the increased cost simply puts these lenses out of reach for most patients," said Dr. Lipstock. "We've been using techniques like Blended Vision for our LASIK patients for years with fantastic results so the application of this type of technique for cataract patients was a logical step. The results we're achieving for our cataract patients thus far are 100% satisfaction which pleases me to no end."
Impressive Patient Results The results Dr. Lipstock's patients receive from Blended Vision are very impressive with 100% patient satisfaction. Many studies show that some patients with Premium IOLs are unhappy to the point that the Premium IOLs must be surgically removed. No Blended Vision patients require IOL removal and the associated risks.
