A New Summer Ice Hotel!

For the first time ever, Sweden's legendary Ice Hotel is now open during the summer months!

Whether you view it as a smart business venture or an ambitious art project, the summer Ice Hotel is a stroke of pure genius. Each winter, the Sweden Ice Hotel is reconstructed from snow and ice when the outside temperature drops sufficiently. However this year, a smaller-scale version is being built inside an enormous storage hall at the Art Centre in Jukkasjärvi village nearby. The temperature within the hall is kept at -5°C, low enough to sustain the spacious ice suites and ICEBAR throughout the summer.

The main site of the Sweden Ice Hotel is located on the banks of the Torne River, around 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle near the charming village of Jukkasjärvi. The summer Ice Hotel is to be constructed inside Jukkasjärvi's Art Centre. Kiruna is the closest city and also the most northerly in Sweden, above which only wild forest exists.

The grand opening of the summer Ice Hotel is planned for June 2011 to coincide with the 100-day period of Midnight Sun, a phenomenon where the sun never sets below the horizon. This occurrence is normal for those living above the Arctic Circle, but for visitors seeing it for the first time, it's a fascinating experience.

The summer Ice Hotel project is a real treat for holidaymakers that wish to combine Sweden's glorious summers with the exciting experience of staying in an ice suite. Three differently themed rooms are planned, the Chandelier Suite, the Main Hall Suite and the exceptional Arktikos 2 Suite which will contain sculptures of polar bears with star constellations in the ceiling. Guests will sleep on beds made of snow and ice, but insulating reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags will ensure a cosy night's sleep.

During their stay at the summer Ice Hotel, visitors have the opportunity to take part in various outdoor activities such as boat trips, canoeing, rafting or fishing on the idyllic Torne River. They can go hiking in the stunning wilderness, or visit the Sami open-air museum and the fascinating Esrange Space Centre nearby. Also at the summer Ice Hotel, guests can learn to master the art of ice sculpture under the expert tuition of skilled artists.

There is never a dull moment at the Ice Hotel, and now with the summer Ice Hotel about to open, the fun of Sweden can be enjoyed all year round.
