A Real life Story of a Childrens Entertainer
Online, December 15, 2009 (Newswire.com) - Kids are an amazing audience. They are so honest. There is no censorship of what they feel or think. They are not going to be kind to spare your feelings. Just to give you a flavour of what happens at children's birthday parties, here's one of my stories that could go into the lore of kids party entertainers.
The princess birthday party:
I had developed princess parties due to popular demand. I had just started a couple of months previously and had done it a few times, wearing my wedding dress. I was about 41 years of age at the time and was wondering if I could get away with being a princess at birthday parties for kids. Looking in the mirror I noticed a few crow's feet marching around my eyes. So at this particular party, I was strutting my stuff as per usual and towards the end I said to the kids, (mostly girls)"I have to go now and get back to fairytale land. When I get back there my car turns into a beautiful golden carriage pulled by fabulous white horses..." One of the girls piped up "And do you become beautiful?" Before I had time to answer one of the other girls asked "She is beautiful but do you get rid of the lines around your eyes?" I answered "It's like an instant facelift". I'm telling you I got home and had a think to myself about the possible longevity of my career. I had a hard look at being one of the many childrens entertainers. Being a childrens clown was one thing, there didn't seem to be an age limit on that. Being a princess was another story. So instead of burying my head in the sand I decided to really hear what they were saying i.e. princesses, at least the ones Disney markets, which is where most girls are getting their information about princesses, are probably in their 20s, possibly 30s. So I rethought the whole princess thing and I now do a fairy godmother party instead. This allows me to have a more wacky character, who is more motherly and entertaining. I can enjoy the princess parties more now as much as the clown parties. I can be funnier and sillier and I am more approachable. I get loads of hugs when I'm leaving which makes it all worthwhile. And I even get to wear beautiful princess dresses, purchased in the meantime.
So you can see that kids tell it like they see it and instead of squirming in embarrassment, if you are open to their honesty you can learn from it. It might even improve your life, as it did in my case.
