A Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer Brings You Something You've Never Seen Before...

DIABLERIES: Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell by Brian May, Denis Pellerin and Paula Fleming

To most people, Brian May is known as a legendary guitarist and founding member of Queen - one of the most iconic bands in rock history. But beyond his love for music and performing, May has embraced another passion, though this one just a bit "darker."

Indulging in his life-long love for stereo cards -- cards with a pair of photographs which give a 3-dimensional view when looked at through a viewer - May has partnered with co-authors Denis Pellerin and Paula Fleming on a most unique publishing endeavor. DIABLERIES: Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell (London Stereoscopic Company, October 2013) brings to life an amazing historical and visual adventure that captivated France in the 1860's and will captivate even more people today.

So what exactly are Diableries? They are a collection of stereo cards which became hugely popular in France from the 1860 until the early 1900's. Each card provides a portrayal of a Gothic Victorian underworld of temptation, seduction and devilish fun that can be viewed in 3-D by the modern-day stereoscope designed by May himself (and which comes with a copy of the book). The authors have found all but two of the Diableries cards in existence and thus this book brings them together in the most comprehensive format ever made available.

The cards are works of art in themselves, and are known as "French Tissues," constructed in a special way to enable them to be viewed (in a stereoscope) illuminated from the front, for a normal 'day' appearance in monochrome; or illuminated from the back, transforming the view into a 'night' scene, in which hidden colors magically appear, and the eyes of the skeletons leap out in red. The scenes depicted in these Diableries were made in clay, on a tabletop, with amazing skill, by a small group of gifted sculptors, and then photographed with a stereo camera.

In addition to the amazing ocular experience you'll get from the stereo cards, DIABLERIES also offers readers:

• Comprehensive biographies of the various Diableries creators, including Habert, Hennetier, Cougny, Block, and others...

• A historical overview on the Second Empire in France (a very overlooked period in French history) - including an allegorical commentary of the iron-fisted regime of Napoleon III told through the prancing little devils

• Descriptions of each of the Diableries which also provide a uniquely insightful window into the social and political history of their time

• A history of stereo photography

• Information on how to take your own stereo photographs

According to May, "It has been a labor of love for us all, and it has taken us to places we never dreamed of. We hope, in these pages, to share this voyage of discovery with readers." To hear more from May, download a brief video at
