A Shred Ahead recycled over 10 million pounds of shredded paper in 2009

Southeast's largest independent shredding company exceeds its own environmental goals

DURHAM, N.C. January 25, 2010 - A Shred Ahead, the Southeast's leading independent document destruction company, recycled over 10 million pounds of unwanted paper in 2009.
The Durham, North Carolina-based company contracts with businesses and organizations that wish to dispose of confidential, unwanted paper. With its fleet of state-of-the-art mobile shredding trucks, A Shred Ahead collects and destroys medical records, intellectual property, and other sensitive information. The company transports unwanted paper directly to regional recycling ventures, turning it into products like printer paper, packing materials, toilet paper, and paper towels. Nearly every piece of unwanted paper is recycled and converted into a new use.
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, a ton of recycled paper saves:
• 3.5 cubic yards of landfill space,
• 17 thirty-foot pulp trees,
• 7,000 gallons of water,
• 380 gallons of oil,
• 4,100 kilowatt hours of energy, and
• 60 pounds of air pollutants.
By recycling 10,442,940 pounds of paper in 2009, A Shred Ahead saved:
• 18,277 cubic yards of landfill space,
• 88,774 thirty-foot pulp trees,
• 36,554,000 gallons of water,
• 1,984,360 gallons of oil,
• 21,410,200 kilowatt hours of energy, and
• 313,220 pounds of air pollutants.
Businesses, organizations, and government agencies can easily share in A Shred Ahead's "green" impact. Shredding unwanted, confidential paper has immediate and significant environmental results. "In 2009, A Shred Ahead has recycled as much paper as a city of 30,000 residents." says Tom Hanlon of A Shred Ahead. "We reached our 2009 goal to recycle 10 million pounds of paper, and we expect to exceed this environmental impact in 2010."
