A View of the Past, a Vision to the Future
NEW YORK, February 8, 2018 (Newswire.com) - Last year, the United States Mint released the first Liberty Gold coin. This edition celebrated the U.S. Mint’s 225th anniversary. It was the first coin to feature a new image of Liberty, this time appearing as an African American woman. This one ounce $100 gold coin was an instant hit and proved to be very popular with investors and collectors alike. The success of this coin prompted the mint to create a very similar, yet much more affordable $10 coin that is now available for purchase.
What many people nowadays don’t realize is that the original model for Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Double Eagle and Indian Head Eagle coins was Henrietta (Hettie) Anderson, who was an African American woman from South Carolina. At a time when racial inequality and injustice was rife in the country, and not even fifty years had passed since the nation came out of the bloody American Civil War, this move by Saint-Gaudens was not only honorable but also very progressive. Hettie is a regular feature in many of Saint-Gaudens’ most popular works. It seems only fitting then, that the new face of the coin features the visage of an African American woman.

A New American Tradition
The American Liberty One-Tenth Ounce 2018 Gold Proof Coin features the same design as its $100 counterpart. On the obverse side, Liberty appears in a left facing profile and wears a diadem of stars atop her head. The reverse features a right-facing, majestic American Bald Eagle in flight, with its wings pointed downwards. This design also pays homage to Saint-Gaudens’ Double Eagle which had its wings pointed up and facing left.
With so much history in one coin, it wouldn’t be surprising to anyone that this coin would be another big hit for the U.S. Mint, so make sure you get your coin today!
