A website has been launched called www.beidiotsafe.com which showcases the bad civic sense and road etiquettes that are commonly seen on the roads

Recently, a website has been launched called www.beidiotsafe.com which showcases the bad civic sense and road etiquettes that are commonly seen on the roads. Every day, we are subjected to so many people who regularly tend to violate traffic and road rules, thereby causing discomfort to others on the road. These people have been classified as "idiots" on the website. On this site, the objective is to acquaint the visitor with different types of people or idiots who do not follow / do not want to follow the Road Etiquettes, traffic rules and regulations. Irony of facts is, literacy is increasing in the country, yet mannerisms are still at the lowest levels.
The website, which was launched on 4th October, 2010, in the past 13 days has received good response. Till now, the total number of visitors are around 97,381, absolute unique visitors are 91,470 and new visitors: 91,579 approximately. The number of returning visitors is 6,085. From the total hits, 25% traffic was generated directly whereas 75% traffic was generated from referral sites.
This site gives a platform where individuals can upload videos on networking sites like facebook, twitter, orkut among others of the people who do not adhere to basic road habits and win prizes. This will also help in self awareness and self realization. Its objective is to raise awareness among the new generation and of course the existing one.
Road conditions in India are feeble. Buying of vehicle has never been so convenient. Developments are ongoing on the roads. While India is witnessing rapid urbanization, there is a lack of infrastructure, public awareness and civic sense. The road rage claims one life in every two minutes, making it the highest rate of road trauma deaths in the world. According to the Global Status Report on Road Safety published by the World Health Organization (WHO), India recorded 30 deaths per 100, 000 people in 2009. Every day, nearly 300 people die and 5,000 people sustain serious injuries.
The people need to have better civic sense and road mannerism. We are used to disrespect the laws laid down by the traffic department, but there are certain safety habits that can save us from tragedy:
- Use of helmets reduce the risk of death by 40% and risk of severe injury by 70%
- Wearing of seatbelts reduces the fatal risk of front passenger by 40%-50% and that of rear passengers by 75%
- Pedestrians have a 90% chance of surviving a car crash at 30 km/h or below, but less than a 50% chance of surviving impacts of 45 km/h or above. Research on effective speed management indicates that speed limits on urban roads must not exceed 50 km/h
- Avoiding usage of cell phones while driving or crossing a busy road prevents automobile accidents
- Crossing road carefully prevents roads accidents to a great extent
- Wearing of seatbelt as it holds the passenger in place during violent maneuvers
- Advertisement board and other items obstruct visibility at junctions, curvatures and other parts of the roads. Hence, be cautious of them.

Villains on the road
It is time that we start identifying those people, who due to their careless behavior cause damage to others on the road. These are the things "idiots" does constantly:
- Over speeding
- Drunken-driving
- Cell phone conversations while driving.
- Dangerous and reckless driving
- Violation of traffic norms and rules
- Negligent pedestrians
- Hawkers who blindly runs across the road
- Jay Walkers
- Signal breakers
- Tailgating
- Cutting others off
- Weaving in and out of traffic
- Forming a "convoy" to block access to a traffic lane
- Honking the vehicle's horn or flashing lights excessively
- Deliberately hitting another person, vehicle or object with one's own vehicle.
- Opening door in the middle of the road & Spitting on the road

The people are so used to all of these that despite repeated warnings from traffic police, media writing about it and friends narrating stories, we still continue with our heritage road habits.
Road sense is not merely a transportation issue; it's a part of social, moral, economic and public health challenge faced by the society. It's just a matter of discipline, proper habits and behaviour, civility and courtesy to be absorbed.
It is time that the new generation and of course the existing start implementing better road habits, it's time to know our "Road Etiquettes". Let us start the awareness by identifying the so-called idiots who don't follow Road Etiquettes.
