About "All-on-4" Dental Implants: Your Hour Television Interview with Dr. Paulo Malo and Dr. Steven Moss

Dr. Paulo Malo, pioneer of "All-on-4" dental implants and President of the MALO CLINICS Group (Lisbon, Portugal), discusses the key benefits of this oral rehabilitation technique with Dr. Steven Moss, an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon from MALO Adv

Cheryl, Your Hour Host:

"It may shock you to learn that more than 30 million Americans have lost or are about to lose their teeth and many of them are not candidates for traditional dental implant procedures. With us today to discuss this issue and some of the alternatives are Dr. Paulo Malo and Dr. Steven Moss. Gentlemen, how widespread is this problem?"

Dr. Steven Moss, American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery:

"Well, it's quite common, Cheryl. It's estimated that there are about 37 million Americans with no teeth at all. That's people we call 'edentulous' and edentulism is a pervasive problem, not only here in the United States, but around the globe. As they go through life, many patients lose their teeth for various reasons, whether it's periodontal disease, tooth decay or trauma. And so we see significant numbers of our population, as we age, without teeth. About 40% of patients over the age of 65 have no teeth at all and that's quite a big number."

Cheryl:

"What is it about these people that prevent them from being considered candidates for traditional dental implant procedures?"

Dr. Steven Moss:

"Typically, as we lose our teeth, we lose the bone that houses the roots of the teeth because there's no more function or pressure put on that bone. So, the bone tends to disappear and when you go to the dentist and ask, 'Doc, what can be done?' He or she says, 'Sorry, you're stuck with your dentures because you don't have enough bone volume to put implants in.'

I'll let Dr. Malo explain how he got around that problem, but for decades here we used to take bone from another part of the body and graft it to the jaw and wait months for that to heal. We'd then put in six or eight or even ten implants to support a full bridge, wait another few months, and then you'd finally get your teeth 12 or 18 months later. Now, all that's gone by the wayside and we can do entire teeth replacement in the same day, sometimes in as little as an hour."

Cheryl:

"Wow! Well, Doctor, tell us about it!"

Dr. Paulo Malo, Founder of MALO CLINIC Group:

"Well, basically it all started in 1990. We actually studied this problem globally and found out that more than 40% of the population above 65 years old, in civilized countries as well, did not have teeth in at least one jaw. This was serious because when you lose your teeth, you also lose your bone and when you do not have bone in your jaws we cannot place the implants. Implants, as you know, are just little screws. This was a major problem because the only way we could give patients teeth was either by giving them a bone grafting procedure, which is basically taking bone from another part of the body and placing it in the maxilla [upper jaw], or by giving them dentures.

Dentures are something from the 19th Century: they're not stable in the mouth and they do not provide quality of life to those that wear them. So, the bone grafting was regarded as the solution at the time. But the problem with bone grafting is that it can only be done in healthy people and specifically in young people. But, as you can imagine, it's not exactly these kinds of people - young and healthy people - who don't have teeth! People who don't have teeth are typically over 60 or 65 years old and suffer from ailments, such as diabetes, periodontitis, osteoporosis and other systemic diseases. As a result, bone grafting was really not that successful and most of the people that did undergo this procedure did so at risk.

I have dedicated 20 years of my life to assessing and finding a solution to this problem and it took about 10 years to develop a system that can actually avoid bone grafting. This system is called the 'All-on-4'. Today, it is globally known and we have received many prizes and honors for it all over the world. But, it all started about 18 years ago and it's the combination of a surgical procedure and products, which, in almost 100% of cases, avoids the need for bone grafting. This breakthrough has three key benefits:

1. By avoiding the need for bone grafting, the price of oral rehabilitation is almost halved and that is very important because we're talking about a lot of money!

2. The second benefit, which is even more important, is that the success rate is almost 100% versus sometimes 40% - 50% of traditional implant procedure patients.

3. And the third is that anybody can do this. It doesn't matter what disease patients present with or what age they are.

So, basically the message is that if your dentist has told you that you cannot have fixed [non-removable] teeth because you do not have enough bone, then you should immediately get in contact with us because today, this simply is not true. Something CAN be done."

Cheryl:

"So is there somewhere our viewers can go to find out who can help them?"

Dr. Paulo Malo:

"We have clinics all over the world, including China, Australia, Moscow, Italy and Portugal and now in the United States and Brazil. We have just started another clinic in the United States, which is the biggest clinic of its kind on the North American continent: it's in New Jersey. But, patients can also check this out with their local dentists. We've been training about 4,000 oral surgeon dentists every year and it's been going on for about six years now. Of course, people are most welcome to contact us directly - we are located in Rutherford, New Jersey."

Cheryl:

"Very cool and is there a website we can go to?"

Dr. Steven Moss:

"Yes, Cheryl, that would be www.malodentalimplants.com. Your audience can also go to YouTube and search for 'MALO CLINICS' or enter the name of the procedure, which is 'All on Four' and they'll be able to see some videos of patients having surgery, getting their teeth replaced and smiling at the end."

Cheryl:

"Thank you both very much for your time, gentlemen!"
