If the idea of sharing with a group of 8 strangers isn't for you, many hostels now offer private rooms for 2 - 4 people, although you have to pay a little more for the luxury of privacy.

The benefit of a vacation rental is that each property is privately owned and self contained; it offers you the freedom to do what you like when you like, and will often reflect the culture of the city you are staying in more than an identikit room from a hotel chain would. They aren't the cheapest form of accommodation in the capital but do offer you a degree of freedom that is not available from a hotel room.

Many people find self-catering accommodation preferable to hotels because it offers flexibility in terms of dining arrangements. Unlike when staying in a hotel, you are free to cook you own food rather than eating out in restaurants, which can help to minimize costs if you are traveling on a budget.
