ACT Exam COVID-19 Catastrophe? Not for Brookhaven High School Junior Sam Arnold Who Just Improved His ACT® Composite Score +5 Points to a 27

Jumpstart Test Prep's curriculum content review and time management strategies proved to be a successful combination by producing gains of +10 Points in Science, +6 Points in English, and +4 Points in both Math and Reading
Brookhaven High School Junior Sam Arnold

While COVID-19 closed many school buildings this past spring, Brookhaven High School (BHS) junior Sam Arnold, like hundreds of thousands of other teens throughout the United States, wondered how his path to college would be affected. Students have had their academic and personal lives turned upside down by COVID-19 as they prepare to showcase their collegiate qualifications with ACT scores, athletics, academic awards, community service, clubs & organizations. All of these activities, one way or the other, have fallen victim to the coronavirus, but not for Sam.

Sam, a cross country and track athlete at BHS, said his running has taught him perseverance, which has carried him throughout this pandemic as he focuses on his 4.0 school work and college choices.

"Running has definitely given me perspective on life where persistence allows you to keep going, even when it's hard," said Sam, who said he adopts lessons from his coach to always look forward, and never look back.

Having attained the rank of Eagle Scout, being elected president of his Brookhaven High School Junior class, and touting the hobbies of skateboarding, rock climbing, aviation, and target shooting, Sam should catch the eye of any college admissions counselor, even on the campus of the famed United States Military Academy, West Point, Sam's top choice.

"I have always wanted to do something bigger than myself," said Sam. "That's just always something that's been put in my heart and something that I always wanted to pursue."

Having a strong ACT score was one element that Sam needed to secure for college admission. As with most, his first attempt left him knowing he could achieve more with better preparation.

Now enters Jumpstart Test Prep. Sam's father, Tripp, recalled hearing about the success of Sam's teammate, Jacob Britt with Jumpstart Test Prep. Tripp also learned about the program through his daughter's class participation, who attended the Mississippi School of the Arts.

"Jumpstart cares about people and invests in their students, and it's reflected by the results that you see in score improvements," said Tripp Arnold. "But, the students need to invest the time into the program for it to work."

Sam said he learned excellent time management skills, particularly how to manage questions within one minute, along with different tips and review that definitely helped him out.

"Jumpstart definitely reviewed in a more organized approach," said Sam. "It made the ACT less terrifying."

Sam completed the Jumpstart Test Prep Math and English review courses along with the Science and Reading review courses by following online video modules while completing flashcards and practice problems in each workbook prior to his ACT exam. After the test results came in, Sam realized dramatic improvements in all subject areas over his first attempt, as well as raising his best prior composite score by +5 points.

•           +4 point improvement in Math

•           +6 point gain in English

•           + 4 point gain in Reading

•           +10 point improvement in Science

"Sam represents a number of students who are able to change their futures with large improvements by using our review products to successfully prepare," says co-founder and CEO Sha Walker. "Our review program was developed by legendary 55-year educator Dot McClendon, who has tutored thousands of students, helping them to perform their best. Jumpstart Test Prep is a proven, modern approach that works for anyone. We are so proud of Sam for his persistence and know he will do great in college."

The company has constructed a program based on over 40 years of work by Mississippi's 19-year STAR teacher hall-of-fame inductee, the legendary educator and tutor, Dot McClendon. Its consistent quality, prestige and innovation is a culmination of her lifetime experience. "I am thrilled by the teacher feedback and the success of our Mississippi High School students using our Jumpstart Test Prep review," said McClendon. "Opening the door to higher learning for students who may never have been accepted, or able to afford college on their own feels very rewarding in itself."

The company has found that when students are coached the right way, they can quickly secure significant gains, regardless of their initial proficiency in the subject area.

Walker and McClendon cite the top three competitive distinctions of Jumpstart Test Prep:

1.         Proven exam prep expertise honed over a lifetime of successful results. The content review is delivered on-demand. It is highly visual, highly animated, and students respond to the ACT® style practice questions.

2.         Engaging preparation experience that is not boring!  Modules are presented by a group of fun, young, diverse people in short segments. Students must actively engage as they follow along in their workbook to build flashcards by completing the blanks and work ACT® style practice problems as the online review progresses.

3.         Improved time management.  Jumpstart Test Prep reviews content step-by-step, then shows how to apply that content with follow-up examples and challenge questions allowing a clock timer countdown. Time is critical on the ACT® and by the end of our review, Jumpstart Test Prep students know the average amount of time they can allocate per question and what to do when too much time has lapsed.

The ACT® was first introduced in 1959 by Everett Franklin Lindquist, a University of Iowa professor as an alternative to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT®). The test, in its current form, is currently administered by ACT®, which is a nonprofit of the same name. The ACT has seen a gradual increase in the number of test takers since its inception, and in 2011 the ACT® surpassed the SAT® for the first time in total test takers; that year, 1,666,017 students took the ACT® and 1,664,479 students took the SAT®.
