Way to go Trojans! One often hears this sentiment when entering the halls of Magee High School (MHS) in Magee, Mississippi. Classrooms are filled with energetic staff and students who are eager to succeed. Magee High School strives to prepare its students to reach their goals. One way the school does this is by providing juniors with Jumpstart Test Prep — a complete review for the ACT that is implemented online, on-demand and boasts the most improvement in the least amount of review time. Jumpstart recently released ACT improvement results from MHS, whose junior class used the Jumpstart Complete ACT prep review to prepare for the state-administered February 2021 ACT® exam (American College Testing). Following completion of Jumpstart's complete ACT prep review, 62 percent of students had an average ACT English score improvement of +4.13 points over their best prior attempt. The school also had 54 percent of students improving their Science scores by an average of +3.71 points, more than 50 percent improving by an average of +4.28 points in Reading, and 38 percent by an average of +1.6 points in Math.

Dr. Brad Blake, principal at Magee High, commented, "The proof is in the pudding, and we cannot argue with the numbers. We are proud of our students and their achievements and I thank my faculty for their implementation of the Jumpstart review program. It is very useful for our students and really helped them improve their time management skills." Coach Jarrod Milloy, who taught the Jumpstart program, said, "I was very impressed with Jumpstart. Students who engage in the program see a dramatic increase in their scores. The program is relatable to every student because it is led by young presenters who do an excellent job of capturing their attention." Milloy added, "The most significant part of the program is that it is a thorough review of knowledge from the eighth grade or so; that review makes such a difference for students." Milloy anticipates seeing Jumpstart Test Prep continue to be implemented at Magee High School.

Multiple MHS students were recognized for their improvement results and shared their thoughts about the program. Sarah Craft, who had an 83 percent improvement over her prior best English score, moving 10 points from a 12 to a 22, said, "Jumpstart Test Prep made the difference for me because it reviewed a lot of information that I haven't seen in a long time and made it relevant to the ACT." Craft added, "I really think other schools should use Jumpstart. It helped me so much." Lydia McGee agrees with Craft. "Jumpstart helped me improve my score by teaching me new things and reviewing from several grades ago. The program just helps to refresh your mind before the ACT — if a student does the program, it will boost their scores." McGee achieved a +5 improvement in Science and a +6 improvement in English. James Floyd, who saw a +11 improvement in the Reading sub-section, said, "Jumpstart specifically helped with my time management skills and it made the difference because it was a review of stuff I haven't seen since sixth grade." Poojan Patel achieved a 23 sub-score in English on his first attempt and said, "Jumpstart's tips and tricks really helped and gave me clear direction." Another student, Kaden Harper, jumped 5 points in Science, and commented, "With Jumpstart, I learned a lot of things and re-learned what I had forgotten; having an overall review helped me the most. I know that Jumpstart really helps and it improves learning skills."

Jumpstart Test Prep is an online review program based on over 60 years of work by Dot McClendon, a legendary educator and Mississippi's 19-year STAR teacher hall-of-fame inductee. "As a teacher at The Mississippi School of the Arts and several other schools during my career, I was able to help guide the preparation of students in person," said McClendon. "Now, through our online, on-demand video review, students in Magee High classrooms, as well as classrooms around the country, around the breakfast table or on the couch at home, are able to benefit from our approach."

All juniors at MHS had access to the following resources:

  • Expert content review and practice, along with test-taking tips and strategies delivered in the classroom via streaming video
  • Online, on-demand, 24-hour review (36 modules, approximately 40 minutes each) of English, Math, Reading, and Science content tested by the ACT® that could be led from the classroom or used individually by students
  • Consumable student workbooks for each subject area to be completed in conjunction with lecture content and later used as a student study guide
  • Online assessments for the Math and English review areas which linked students back to their weaker areas reviewed in the Jumpstart module content

School administrators utilized an online dashboard reflecting the video module completion progress of teachers assigned to proctor the review and/or individual student progress.
