"Adam Carolla Shares His 'Do Over Story' in Rare Interview with Matt Theriault"

Change is a good thing, whether we expect it or not and how we handle (or process) that change, says a lot about our focus.  Carolla “looks at internalizing as just taking responsibility for your own results.”  He theorizes that many of us process things differently than he does.  “You think externalizing is so much more convenient because it’s never your fault (anything), but the problem is when you externalize, you give someone else the power to control your life, which is not a good thing.”  Carolla prefers full control so he is constantly internalizing; “I like full control so I do full internalization; …sometimes you gotta take a look at yourself which isn’t so flattering but it does give me full control.”

When asked how he perceives his success, Carolla is humble and suggests that he just keeps moving forward.  And moving forward he does.  “The more you do the easier it gets to do more and in a more efficient manner,” says Carolla, when asked how he makes time for all of his enterprises.  Efficiency is key, as is resilience and an unexpected career ‘do over.’  “I got fired years ago in the midst of a big downturn in the economy and nobody was hiring… I (quickly) realized I’m gonna have to hit the road to make ends meet and that was really humbling.”

Humbling as it may have been, Carolla believes that his ‘do over’ is totally attributable to “…fear for my professional future, fear for my family’s financial future, and instead of getting into a fetal position, I’m gonna have to come out fighting.”  And fight he did.  Three books, two movies, a hit television show (Catch a Contractor), and an unparalleled number of podcast hits later, Adam Carolla has demonstrated that he is not squandering his abilities.  An avid auto racer, who likes “my stuff” and invests in real estate from time to time, Carolla has reinvented himself time and time again, most recently creating the Take A Knee motivational podcast.
