AiMA Scholarship Fund Named for Slain Interactive Marketing Professional

Atlanta, GA: The Board of the Atlanta Interactive Marketing Association voted unanimously to re-name its student scholarship fund in memory of interactive marketer Brittney Watts, who died in July, 2011 during a downtown Atlanta shooting spree.

A 2007 graduate of UGA with a degree in advertising and sociology, Watts was a digital planning supervisor for 22squared at the time of her death. According to her Linkedin profile, she joined the company in 2008 as a digital media planner. Before moving to 22squared, she was an interactive media planner for Fitzgerald & Co. in Atlanta. The 26-year-old Watts, a Decatur native, was actively involved in the digital community.

"This tragedy should not be forgotten by the interactive community," said AiMA President Chris Plunkett. "Brittney lived and worked among us, and we are pleased to dedicate our student scholarship fund to her memory as a way of helping her legacy to live on."

Since 2007, the AiMA Internship Program has provided selected interns with AiMA student memberships, access to AiMA events, networking and leadership opportunities, and the chance to earn scholarships based on event participation and performance reviews by their supervisors. The program has grown from eight interns in 2007 to more than 25 in 2011, with strong expectations for continued growth.

Three outstanding marketing majors at Georgia colleges and universities were awarded scholarships totaling $10,000 in 2011. These students interned at Google, Response Mine Interactive, and Nurun Interactive during the summer. Fabian Elliot, who interned at Google, has already received an offer for employment from Google.

This year's scholarship sponsors included Coca-Cola, Aqua Blue Interactive and Blinq Media.
