Albion's Slapometer Election Leader's Game Hits the 70 Millionth Slap

The Slapometer, invented by London digital-led agency Albion, has been a huge hit online during the general election campaign, recording over 70 million 'virtual slaps' to the faces of Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg.

Some 168,169 thousand people have used the site at least once. However as the election battle entered its final week, Apple turned down Albion's application to launch an iphone app version of Slapometer as it "ridicules public figures".

Albion launched www.slapometer.com on 1 April as a tongue in cheek alternative to allow voters to express their true feelings about the three main leaders during the three TV debates. But, even before the first TV debate, the device was an immediate hit online with bloggers, Facebookers and Tweeters. It has been covered by the FT, BBC News, Channel 4 News online, the Telegraph.co.uk and even the Wall Street Journal and Der Spiegel.

A month on (by this weekend) Gordon Brown had received most slaps with 35,598,691 (51%), David Cameron had to cope with 24,796,624 (36.6%) slaps and Nick Clegg can celebrate the least slaps with 9,308,897 (13.4%).

The Slapometer was created as a 'watch-a-long' website for people to use on their laptops whilst watching the debates live on TV. It also has a 'practice mode', for before, in-between and after the debates. Like a more brutal version of the now famous 'Worm' monitor of attitudes to the leaders, live graphs on Slapometer show how people are venting their frustrations in real time.

The Slapometer took to the streets on the day of the final debate. With help from Zenith Optimedia, passers-by in Manchester and Glasgow were able to follow the slapping accompanying the third TV debate on huge digital screens in the two city centres.

Jason Goodman, CEO of Albion says that "Slapometer has grown by word of mouth and has become a platform for UK voters to let out their frustration with this year's candidates. With 70 million slaps so far it shows we have an amazing data set which will help plot the highs and lows of both the live broadcasts and the general election as a whole".
