"All On 4" Implants: A Marvel of Modern Dentistry

All On 4 implants specialist, Dr. Brueggen, talks to us about the main features of the oral rehabilitative breakthrough creating waves in the fields of dental implantology.

Since its conception in the early 1990's, All On 4 Implants have revolutionized the way dentists approach the treatment of patients who are edentulous (toothless) or who suffer from advanced periodontal disease and tooth loss. According to statistics released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there are an estimated 38 million Americans living without a single original adult tooth in their mouths. Traditionally, removable dentures or "false teeth" were the solution offered to people who had lost most if not all of their natural teeth. But, since the explosion of the popularity of dental implants in the 1980's, far more sophisticated teeth replacement solutions have become available and one of them is known as the "All On 4". We spoke to Dr. Wayne Brueggen of the Brueggen Dental Implant Center about this "revolutionary" dental implant protocol and its main features.

What is the "All On 4"?

The "All On 4" is a dental implant procedure used to give edentulous and near edentulous patients a brand new set of fixed (non-removable) teeth. Because these teeth are anchored in the mouth using dental implants, they offer a variety of benefits over and above traditional teeth replacement technologies, in particular removable partial and full dentures. The protocol was designed by European implantologist, Dr. Paulo Malo, under whom Dr. Wayne Brueggen received hands-on training.

The aim of the "All On 4" was to offer patients a far more sophisticated, comprehensive and long-term solution to edentulism, tooth loss and failing dentition, while bypassing many of the challenges, risks and complications that plagued traditional dental implant techniques. After many years of clinical research and trials, the All On 4 was proven to achieve this goal.

Today, tens of thousands of previously toothless patients are living with permanent teeth that look, feel and function just like natural teeth. Thanks to All On 4 Implants, more people enjoy a healthy and confident smile! So, just what does this protocol entail? How does it work and what are its main features?

Features of "All On 4" Implants

The All On 4 involves the attachment of a customized dental prosthesis to four strategically placed dental implants. The prosthesis is carefully made to closely look and function like a complete set of replacement teeth (see above picture).

"The defining feature of the All On 4 protocol is that it only requires four dental implants to provide patients with a new arch of upper or lower teeth," explains Dr. Brueggen. "The surgical guide developed by Dr. Paulo Malo and Nobel Biocare, one of the world's largest and most respected dental implant manufacturers, is standard across the board and can provide just about any patient with new teeth in as little as a single day, with a single surgery and typically without the need for bone grafting first."

Avoiding the need for bone grafting is another key feature of the "All On 4" and is essentially what makes it possible for qualified implant dentists to achieve same day results...

"Bone grafting is a procedure typically required for patients who have been wearing dentures and/or missing teeth for many years and who have, as a result, lost a lot of bone volume in the jaw," says Dr. Brueggen. "We perform this surgery to augment bone volume in the jaw and in doing so, provide a stable foundation for dental implants once healing has taken place."

"The problem with bone grafting is that it is invasive, Dr. Brueggen goes on to explain. "It requires a long and painful recovery process; it's expensive and adds many months onto the waiting period for new teeth. The ability of the All On 4 to avoid the need for bone grafting therefore constitutes a considerable leap forward and one that makes it possible for us to give patients a new set of teeth in just one day and with one surgery."

And once patients have new teeth? What can they expect?

"The replacement teeth the All On 4 provides patients with are fixed and non-removable. They are cleaned like natural teeth and are able to support a much stronger bite than traditional dentures. They also look and feel like natural teeth and eliminate most, if not all of the challenges, repeat expenses and problems caused by wearing dentures. There really is no comparison," says Dr. Brueggen.

So, at a glance, here are the key features of the All On 4 protocol:

1. Avoids the need for bone grafting

2. Has a high success rate

3. High aesthetics and functionality

4. High hygiene maintenance capability

5. Allows the patient to immediately have teeth

6. Low cost for the patient

7. Lasts several decades without the need for replacement.
