Alternatives to Gastric Bypass Surgery Are Safer and Cheaper

A recent Stanford University study examined 980 patients who had gastric bypass surgery.

A recent Stanford University study examined 980 patients who had gastric bypass surgery. Among this group, 12 patients reduced their body-mass index prior to the surgery; one year later, these 12 experienced better outcomes in terms of diabetes and lost more weight than the other 968. The authors also noted that because these 12 were not as fat when the surgery was performed, the gastric procedure itself took less time. Study co-author Dr. John Morton said, "What we found amounts to what I think is a big lesson: We ought to intervene with these patients earlier than previously thought."

"Twelve people made the decision to reduce their weight before their surgery via lifestyle and diet modification," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "Was it the surgery or the diet and lifestyle changes that made these people different and provided them with better results?"

"Why would surgeons think they should start intervention earlier, doing gastric bypass surgeries on people who weigh less?" asks Tom. "Based on this study and their conclusion, I can only think of two reasons: either it would give them a much larger pool of prospective patients; or, they would spend less time in the operating room. Combined, they seem like a win-win for gastric bypass surgeons and the hospitals where these procedures are done. After all, the procedure costs $20K-$25K and sometimes more."

"In TurboCharged, we explain how you can use water to mimic gastric bypass or lap-banding procedures effectively for free," says Dian. "Along with following the other seven steps, we guarantee better health, energy and fat-loss with no risk. You can save that $20K for a really nice vacation on a beach somewhere in your lean new body."
