Amlogic Transforms the TV Experience With Dolby Vision™ Technology

Amlogic and Dolby Labs announce Dolby Vision in Amlogic's S912 series chipsets for set-top box use. Dolby Vision delivers a dramatic visual experience that brings entertainment to life with astonishing brightness, contrast, and color. With Dolby Vision, Amlogic offers an SoC solution for set-top box makers who want to offer Internet-based or OTT viewing.

Amlogic, in partnership with Dolby Laboratories, today announced Dolby Vision integration in Amlogic’s 4K HDR S912 series chipsets. Dolby Vision delivers a dramatic visual experience that brings entertainment to life with astonishing brightness, incomparable contrast, and captivating color. The result is a refined, lifelike image that is more realistic than anything standard displays can produce today.

With Dolby Vision technology, Amlogic offers a system-on-chip (SoC) solution that is ideal for set-top box manufacturers who want to offer Internet-based viewing or ‘over-the-top’ (OTT) viewing in their products. Internet viewership, as compared to traditional cable or satellite viewership, is growing rapidly, thus generating demand for new and better set-top boxes. With Dolby Vision, content creators retain the intended detail and integrity of their movies and TV shows, ultimately delivering a premium home-viewing experience for end-users around the globe.

Amlogic customers will have access to the most advanced video playback technology in a cost-effective manner with Dolby Vision integration. We've put a great deal of effort into designing a device that will transform the home viewing experience.

James Xie, Vice President, Corporate Business Strategy

“Amlogic’s customers will have access to the most advanced video playback technology in a cost-effective manner with Dolby Vision integration,” said James Xie, Vice President, corporate business strategy at Amlogic. “We’ve put a great deal of effort into designing a device that we believe will transform the home viewing experience and add value across the content creation and playback pipeline.”

The Amlogic S912 series SoC include eight ARM Cortex processors and powerful high speed GPUs to handle complicated UI and content.  The S912 also features the AVE-10 video engine to accelerate video codec processing. The powerful engine can decode 4K2K resolution video in both HEVC and VP9 format at a full 60 frames per second, which delivers a flicker-free viewing experience. The AVE-10 also supports Trusted Video Path (TVP), multiple HDR format support and video watermarking technologies for secured 4K DRM applications.

“We are proud to bring our customers incomparable, next-generation viewing experiences in partnership with Amlogic,” said Roland Vlaicu, Vice President, consumer imaging at Dolby Laboratories. “The Amlogic S912 is an excellent platform for Dolby Vision because it gives set-top box manufacturers more access to the advanced imaging that consumers demand. Ultimately, end users will enjoy TV shows and movies with stunning contrast, brightness and color that simply wasn’t achievable in traditional displays.”

Amlogic and Dolby will jointly demonstrate their new IC and Dolby Vision technology in the Dolby booth (Hall 2, Stand A11) at the IBC2016 show in Amsterdam, from Sept. 9-12. Amlogic S912 with Dolby Vision supports both high dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut from content creation to production, transmission, and playback. The system is also backward compatible with current 8-bit video systems.

About Dolby Vision

Dolby Vision is a transformative technology for imaging that delivers a dramatic visual experience—astonishing brightness, incomparable contrast, and captivating color—that brings entertainment to life via OTT online streaming, broadcast, and gaming applications.

Even though most content is captured and rendered using technology that produces the colors and brightness of real life, much of that richness is lost by the time it gets to your living room. That's because current color-grading standards are based on the limitations of current television technologies and require that the content be altered to match their display performance—dramatically reducing the range of colors, brightness, and contrast.

Dolby Vision changes that, giving creative teams the freedom to use the full gamut of colors, peak highlights, brightness, and contrast, with the confidence that those will be reproduced faithfully on televisions that feature Dolby Vision technology.

As a universal HDR playback solution, Dolby Vision VS10 offers unique value by combining the ability to play back Dolby Vision content as well as other HDR profiles based on the SMPTE ST 2084 standard through one integrated playback solution. This enables a high-quality HDR experience on products ranging from entry level to high end by leveraging the capabilities of the respective hardware as much as possible.
