Another Chance Announces Friendship Basketball Game for Individuals With Developmental Disabilities

Another Chance is pleased to announce The Another Chance Friendship Classic Basketball Tournament (A.C.F.C.) effective September 24, 2015.

Started on September 24, 2015, Another Chance has given the chance for other adult programs to bring together their clients with special needs to compete in a sport they enjoy at Lucious-Sanders Recreation Center in Lithonia, GA. A.C.F.C. showcases an individual's’ “ability” within and the passion of the loved game of basketball. The first meet-up was between Another Chance and Dembure. The scoreboard clearly stated that the basketball abilities were very strong, ending with a victorious 45 to 19 for Another Chance.  Competing companies manage adult day programs for clients with developmental disabilities including but not limited to creating opportunities through Community Living Support, Community Integration and Community Access Groups. Somewhere in between 60-80 spectators cheered the teams along with the pom-poms from both sets of cheerleaders. DJ Tabone, known from Atlanta’s trendy venues and 89.3FM, provided a Phillips Arena-style experience of music and sound effects.

The center’s other individuals, caregivers and parents are encouraged to create signs and banners days before the actual event. There is a halftime show performed by both cheerleading teams. The game lasts an average of two hours and then everyone is served lunch. Afterwards, all cheerleaders and players receive ribbons or metals. The score however, dictates who gets the championship trophy!

On October 16, 2015, Smart Place of Decatur, GA met against Another Chance. This time, Smart Place stepped up the team spirit with personalized purple jerseys. Without any injury and some amazing 3-pointers, Smart Place was not able to hold off Another Chance’s winning final score of 52 to 17. Again, the two companies carefully chauffeured their clients in buses, vans and utilized the help of MARTA Mobility to return everyone back to their centers or planned destinations.

The public is invited to this free community event and any media coverage is welcomed to help these superstars of the disabled community shine. A few centers have requested a date to play while others are just receiving the buzz of enjoyment starting out of east metro-Atlanta. The event is typically held on a Friday morning and information can be found on social media or local posting like Access Atlanta and Creative Loafing.
