Apex College Prep Announces Winners of Elementary School Math Tournament
Online, June 5, 2011 (Newswire.com) - WALNUT CREEK, CA - May 27, 2011 - Apex College Prep Team (Jamie An, Andrew Kang, Jun Kim, Helen Rhee, Jinseo Yang), coached by Jason Yi, placed first out of 10 teams at the 3rd Annual Apex Math Olympiad at Dorris Eaton School on Saturday, May 21, 2011. Placing second was Montair Elementary team (Raymond Fang, Jeffrey Khau, Jeremy Lahr, Joshua Wu, Ethan Yu) and third was Fairlands Elementary School (Maxime Berenshteyn, Kevin Gao, Nikhil Padavala, Deepak Ragu, Kevin Zhu). 50 students in grades 4 and 5 each competed face-to-face for 3 hours on 5-member teams.
Sponsored by Apex College Prep and organized by Julie Yi, the students had to solve 20 to 25 clever, engaging, and challenging problems on a variety of mathematical topics. This produced an exciting atmosphere for student and teacher alike.
Jun Kim of Apex College Prep was the outstanding individual for the day, taking first place in an exhilarating playoff. Placing second was Andrew Kang of Apex College Prep, Kevin Gao of Fairlands Elementary School was third.
About Apex Math Tournament: The tournament is a regional annual math competition sponsored by Apex College Prep with the help of Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS). MOEMS developed the program to promote students to engage in a fun and challenging competition during the months between March when the last MOEMS contest is given and summer.
