Are Gluten-Free Foods Really Healthier?
SupermarketGuru estimates that many large food manufacturers like General Mills and Campbell's Soup are cashing in on this demand, creating a market where sales of "gluten-free" products now exceed $2.5 billion dollars per year.
Online, October 10, 2011 (Newswire.com) - More and more products on supermarket shelves are being labeled gluten-free. Even products that most people would know are gluten-free are stating this fact on their labels or using it in promotion and marketing. What's going on?
It is estimated that about three million Americans suffer from a severe autoimmune condition, celiac disease, that is triggered by gluten. Many more are now searching out gluten-free products to avoid possible gluten-related allergies. This is not easy if your diet contains refined, processed, manufactured or fast foods, because gluten naturally occurs in grain-based products or is often added to other types of packaged foods.
SupermarketGuru estimates that many large food manufacturers like General Mills and Campbell's Soup are cashing in on this demand, creating a market where sales of "gluten-free" products now exceed $2.5 billion dollars per year.
"Just like the fat-free and lactose-free trends that preceded it, gluten-free is the latest way manufacturers of these products are trying to get your money," says boomer generation health expert Dian Griesel, Ph.D., who with her brother Tom Griesel is the author of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH). "These fake foods are promoted as healthy alternatives but they are definitely not. Most are totally void of any nutritional value and leave your body starving for critical nutrients."
The TurboCharged program, say the Griesels, is naturally gluten-free, because grains and especially refined, processed and prepackaged products are avoided. Instead, the program focuses on eating the same whole natural foods that have helped humans survive and thrive for hundreds of thousands of years. By doing so, the Griesels say we can avoid the metabolic disruptions that can occur when eating things we were never designed or adapted to eat.
