Cooper Family Dentistry Supports Oral Cancer Awareness in April
Jacksonville, AR, April 5, 2016 (Newswire.com) - April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and as a leading dental group in Arkansas, Cooper Family Dentistry, with locations throughout central Arkansas, would like to encourage oral health awareness this spring.
Oral and pharyngeal cancer collectively kills nearly one person every hour of every day of the year, according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). Of the people newly diagnosed with these cancers, only about 60 percent will live longer than five years.
Ways to prevent oral cancers include: not using/quitting tobacco products, moderating (or eliminating) alcohol consumption, avoiding excessive sun exposure, eating a variety of fruits and vegetables and attending regular dental check-ups, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Cooper Family Dentistry is a family-operated dental practice which offers an array of services from comprehensive/preventive care, cosmetic dentistry, restorations, dental implants, to oral/maxillofacial surgery and more. Cooper Family Dentistry is led by a father-son duo: Dr. James Cooper and, son, Dr. Jordan Cooper. The practice is focused on providing quality dental care and helping all patients achieve optimal oral health.
About 48,330 people will get oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer in 2016, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates. An estimated 9,570 people will die of these cancers.
The average age of most people diagnosed with these cancers is 62, but they can occur in young people, according to the ACS. They are rare in children, but a little more than one-quarter occur in patients younger than 55. These cancers are more than twice as common in men as in women, according to the ACS.
Dr. James Cooper graduated from dental school at the University of Missouri, Kansas City and has been practicing dentistry in Jacksonville since 1973.
Dr. Jordan Cooper has been placing dental implants since 2006 and continues to pursue education to ensure his patients receive the best possible care. He is passionate about his community and is involved in many community-oriented efforts.
