Aromatherapy Expert Dorene Petersen Interviewed for ABC News Feature on Essential Oils for Healthy Sleep

Dorene Petersen, president and founder of the American College of Healthcare Sciences (ACHS), was featured in the ABC news story "Products to help you sleep better and sounder." (Aired April 7, 2016.) Watch: http://www.abc2news.com/news/health/products-to-help-you-sleep-better-and-sounder

The Institute of Medicine previously estimated that between 50-70 million U.S. adults have a “sleep or wakefulness disorder[1].” This is a public health concern, according to the CDC, who have linked insufficient sleep to motor vehicle crashes, industrial disasters, and medical and other occupational error[2].

Petersen, an internationally recognized aromatherapy expert with more than 35 years’ experience, emphasized the use of aromatherapy essential oils as an alternative method to support healthy sleep (00:47/02:04).

Aromatherapy—the use of aromas for their healing properties—is a natural, safe, and relatively inexpensive alternative method of promoting optimal health and wellness. Healthy sleep is a popular use of aromatherapy, as many commercial beauty and wellness-based products are now available to the general public.

In addition to products like essential oils, aromatherapy sprays, and herbal sleep pillows, Petersen discussed formulated products like an aromatherapy essential oil blend calming sleep patch, developed by ACHS graduate Jodi Baglien. These and similar products often include lavender Lavandula angustifolia (Mill.) essential oil, which research has proven to have a relaxing effect, as Petersen emphasized.

Petersen cautioned, however, to read all product labels carefully as some aromatherapy essential oils are calming, while others are re-energizing.
