As Focus on Self-Care Grows, Financial Education Benefits Center Will Aim to Make Self-Care Easier

Self-care is a much-discussed topic that’s come to be known as a hallmark of the millennial generation. But what’s so newsworthy about what could be described simply as a little “me time”? Some criticize young adults as too selfishly focused on themselves, but burnout is a real phenomenon that can occur from taking too little care of oneself emotionally and physically, not to mention other ailments and diseases that may be caused or exacerbated by stress. Whatever the current popular opinion is, self-care seems like it’s here to stay, and the folks at the Financial Education Benefits Center don’t think that’s a bad thing. FEBC will be rolling out new benefits that help members of all ages and walks of life engage in some valuable self-care.

Self-care may be just a trend, or it could be a real social movement. Whichever the case, experts are recommending self-care as a necessary component of wellness, including psychological wellness. While eating right and exercising are important for physical health, maintaining emotional health can be just as integral to a healthy lifestyle. For example, psychologist Guy Winch is a proponent of “emotional first aid,” or a regimen of actions every person can take to effectively tend to psychological wounds and help create long-term psychological well-being. FEBC will be offering a counseling benefit to members to help address this need. With the benefit, eligible FEBC members will be able to easily access licensed counselors by calling a number and receiving on-the-phone counseling. This service will be at no additional cost to eligible members.

Self-care is definitely becoming a key part of any healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically, and we [at FEBC] are excited about pitching in.

Jennifer Martinez, Manager at the Financial Education Benefits Center

“Self-care is definitely becoming a key part of any healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically, and we are excited about pitching in,” said Jennifer Martinez, manager at FEBC. “FEBC is going to be offering these benefits that just make self-care simpler.”

If you live a busy and full life, however, self-care may seem anything but simple. Between working and caring for a family, squeezing in a few moments to even acknowledge necessary psychological and physical health needs might prove difficult. However, it’s especially important to do so during the holidays, which might be a flurry of presents and parties; not to mention the pressure to create that signature holiday “magic.” So enlisting someone to help might be the best way for a person to even get a moment to practice self-care. FEBC aims to address this issue by offering an upcoming benefit concerned with work-life balance, offering resources and coordinating help for taking care of a household, children, elders and more.

“Self-care shouldn’t be a luxury, but a fundamental part of life,” said Martinez. “However, we realize that’s not the case for everyone. We know that responsibilities can pile up and taking time for yourself may be hard. But these benefits that we are bringing to FEBC members are meant to take away some of the barriers to self-care.”
