Ashton Whiteley - UK Called on to Consider Tourism Sector

SHANGHAI, March 25, 2018 (Newswire.com) - An industry association has urged the UK to consider the needs of the tourism and travel sector when conducting its Brexit negotiations. Ashton Whiteley analysts have warned that Britain could lose out on growth and income as well as the creation of new jobs in the travel and tourism sector if it does not consider the impact of Brexit.

According to data from the World Travel and Tourism Council, the UK’s travel and tourism sector contribution to Britain’s GDP increased by 6.2 percent last year while the economy only grew at a rate of 1.5 percent.

Ashton Whiteley analysts say that a weaker pound has helped to entice foreign travelers and kept many British holidaymakers at home but the WTTC says the UK must make a concerted effort to keep access to the single European aviation market if it wants to be assured of ongoing growth in the travel and tourism sector.

The UK is due to withdraw from the EU on March 29, 2019, and the WTTC says tourism in Britain could create as many as 400,000 new jobs in the next decade.

Ashton Whiteley analysts believe it is imperative that the UK has a workforce with the right skills to support growth in the travel and tourism sector. If this is neglected in Brexit discussions, the country will be unable to maximize growth potential.

WTTC data revealed that the global tourism sector expanded by 4.6 percent in 2017 and that 20 percent of jobs created globally were in the tourism sector.
