Aspiring New Fashion Designer From Tennessee Launches Debut Line of Wedding Dresses
Tennessee local, Olivia Brouwer, previews her debut line of wedding dresses on www.365DaysofSewing.com.
Online, May 30, 2011 (Newswire.com) - 365 Days of Sewing is hosting a special preview of a debut line of wedding dresses, designed by newcomer, Olivia Brouwer of Tennessee. Brouwer began sewing dresses for her Barbie dolls when she was four-years-old. Now at the age of ten, she is excited to launch her first line of wedding dresses.
"I like sewing teddy bears and pillows and dresses, but now I am mainly working on wedding dresses," said Brouwer.
Every day after school, Brouwer spends nearly every waking minute sewing, until bedtime that is. At bedtime, she sits in her bed with her needles and thread when she is supposed to be sleeping. That is when she does some of her best work. Brouwer is the daughter of Cindy Morgan Brouwer (http://www.cindymorganmusic.com), an 11-time Dove Award nominated singer / songwriter.
"I remember when she was four. She asked me if she could make this sock into a dress for her doll. She came back a few minutes later with a perfectly fitted dress on her tiny doll," said Cindy Brouwer.
Brouwer recently saved up $92 of her allowance to purchase her first dress form. When the box arrived, she was "a little low on fabric," so her first dress is made out of a white bed sheet.
"I am a little low on white material so I have been making a lot of tea-length wedding dresses," said Brouwer.
Currently, all of Brouwer's wedding dresses are sewn by hand, but she has plans to start sewing with a sewing machine in the near future.
"I am going to get my grandma's sewing machine. A long time ago my grandma got a sewing machine. My grandma sewed a lot. She helped inspire me to sew. She even got me a little sewing basket to keep all of my sewing supplies," said Brouwer.
All of Brouwer's designs are original. In fact, she rarely uses patterns.
"I try to not use patterns so that I can save time. I want to get each dress done as quickly as possible so I can start the next one, but I also want it to be quality," said Brouwer.
Brouwer finds inspiration for her designs in lots of different places.
"I try to image all the wedding dresses I have seen. Sometimes I look at articles. I look at magazines to see what other people have done for inspiration. I take a few ideas and make them my own," said Brouwer.
When asked, "What is it about fashion that you are drawn to?," Brouwer responds by saying, "I am just drawn to the future. I have made myself a little future book. It is about how many kids I am going to have, what my wedding dress will look like...I like doing it, and I like designing clothes. I love making wedding dresses. The most important thing on your wedding day is that you walk down the aisle in the most beautiful wedding dress."
Brouwer keeps all of her designs in her "future book," which is a sketchbook filled with more than 100 unique designs, and she plans to complete every one of them. Her line of dresses will be available in approximately 15 years. Most designs are also available in miniature, designed to fit your Barbie dolls.
"I'm going to make all of them," said Brouwer. "In my next 15 years, I want to accomplish marriage, kids, and starting my business."
When Brouwer gets married, she plans to wear a white tea-length wedding dress with one-strap and a 42-inch train-one of her own designs, of course.
