Immune checkpoint inhibitors, chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy and a range of other immuno-oncology techniques designed to rally the adaptive immune system to the patient’s defense have shown extremely promising results across a wide range of indications, often with much more tolerable side-effect profiles than traditional chemotherapy or targeted therapies.

These therapies, however, present special challenges to both treating physicians and those attempting to evaluate the results of clinical trials. In particular, pseudoprogression due to both delayed response to therapy and apparent tumor growth resulting from edema secondary to therapy can confound evaluation of patients undergoing immunotherapy using standard response criteria.
