Auckland Motorists Will Enjoy Easy Travel Thanks To The SH18 Motorway Project

The SH18 Hobsonville Deviation proves that teamwork, smart design and innovative technology can surmount any obstacle.

(San Diego, CA)- In an interview with Business Review Australia, David Loe, Project Director for the SH18 Hobsonville Project discusses his secrets for success in the face of financial and geologic challenges.

The SH18 Hobsonville extension is the final part of the Northwestern Motorway project of the New Zealand Transport Agency. Designed to alleviate traffic congestion and accommodate future growth, the motorway project will also serve as an alternative route to the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

The project faced challenges early on due to the clay soil of the area, situated in an alluvial plain. Additionally, steel prices steadily rose after the project was granted to HEB Construction. David Loe, a seasoned construction leader with HEB construction with the experience and established relationships, led the team to surmount each challenge through reliance upon teamwork, smart design and the use of the innovative 3D technology. It also helped to have the versatility of a design and build contract.

"That's one of the benefits of having a design and build contract; we could vary some of the contract items," says Loe. "It was agreed that changing that bridge superstructure to concrete not only reduced our liability for increased steel prices it meant that the long-term maintenance of that structure was reduced."
