Automobile Recall Goes Global

iRecalls.com makes public statement regarding global recall of vehicles manufactured by Volkswagen

Volkswagen has issued a global recall that affects 2.64 million vehicles. The recall aims to fix flaws in the drive systems of some of its more popular models. The issues involve the lubricant currently in use in the gearboxes of 1.6 million of its cars, an additional 800,000 of its Tiguan compact SUVs and 239,000 Amarok pickup trucks. The manufacturer is replacing the synthetic oil currently in use with convention mineral oil in an effort to fix an issue with fuel leaks in these vehicles.

When contacted for comment on this issue, iRecalls founder Drazen Alcocer had this to say:

"When a company discovers that there is a problem with so many vehicles, it's clear that issues started to surface some time ago. It can take months, and in some cases years before a company issues a recall or even admits that a problem exists. This is why I believe iRecalls.com is so well-positioned as a source of information. People want to know about these things when they happen, wherever they happen."

Artin Afsharjavan - chairman of iFederated, parent company to iRecalls, went on to explain how social media could be a solution to closing the time gap. "The issue had the greatest effect in China," he said, "but it's obvious that the problem was more widespread from the onset. The faster news like this spreads, the better protected people will be. That is what we hope to accomplish with iRecalls. We want it to be the place this kind of news breaks first and there is no better way to accomplish that these days than through social media."

"When I think about the danger that so many people are placed in when things like this happen," Alcocer said, "It makes me all the more convinced that iRecalls.com is in the right place at the right time. We are building an online community that is based on timely delivery of news and information coupled with the contributions of the members of the community." He described this merging of communication efforts as "powerful and dynamic."

"As we grow," Afsharjavan said, "I can see stories like these breaking much faster. This will put pressure on these companies to issue recalls sooner and it will put far fewer people at risk."
