Always keen to lend his support to children's medical research charity, Sparks, serviced office operator Avanta's managing director, David Alberto, is planning to raise £10,000 for the charity by competing in the Lakeland 100, a gruelling 105 mile fell race through the Lake District.

Now in its fourth year the Lakeland 100, which takes place at the end of July, is considered the Uk's most spectacular and toughest ultra distance trail race. The circular route encompasses the whole of the Lakeland fells, and includes 22,000 feet of ascents and the same in descents and consists entirely of public bridleways and footpaths.

The event is continuous in nature and the winners are generally expected to finish close to the 23 hour mark. The overall time allowed for the race is 40 hours and therefore the cut off time is 9.30am on Sunday 31st July. This means all competitors will be running though the night of the 29th July and some into the second night of the 30th July.

"The event ideally requires competitors to be experienced ultra distance runners with excellent navigation skills," comments David Alberto. "So whilst this is my very first 100 mile event, I've run a number of long distance events the longest being 60 miles in the Brecon Beacons and have been training hard since the beginning of the year for the event.

"The dropout rate over the last few years has been around 70% and I am under no illusion as to how hard this race is. However I am confident that my training has fully prepared me as raising money for Sparks is an extremely worthy cause. I aim to complete the course in under 30 hours and I know the thought of the monies being raised for Sparks will be a key motivator when the challenging times during the race are upon me".
