During the whirlwind of activities that occur when purchasing a new home, it is easy to feel like we've lost our sanity! Here are some simple tips to help ensure we stay focused and grounded during the process.

Organize things for the sake of the kids.

We may not realize it but even if we have only lived in a certain home for a few short years, our babies have only been on earth a few short years. So while we may be simply leaving a house-often times the kids are leaving their lifelong home.

Always speak about the move in a cheerful way-even if some things have you feeling ill about the move, the children do not need to know this. Make sure your kids visit the neighborhood before you move them there and even see the new house if it is at all possible. Involve them in decision making, like paint color and gardening ideas. Make leaving what they've known as their home a good experience with a simple party and be sure to take pictures of them in the current home, make sure everyone is smiling for the camera!!

Educate Yourself.

Nothing can be more stressful than waiting for all the parties involved to sign the papers and seal the deal. We can often begin to resent and or blame others for doing their job or taking their time. Most of the time this is not the case and the hold up is a legitimate reason. With knowledge and understanding of the process you can feel confidant that things are going as they should.

Have Faith.

There is so much going on when buying a new house, feeling panicky is to be expected. As hard as it may be, you have got to force yourself to take a deep breath (or ten) and relax. Trust the process.

Be Limber in Your Thinking.

It is not uncommon for there to snags or changes in the way things are going. It may seem like everything is set and the keys to your new home will be in your hands on Tuesday, but Friday the inspection reveals a new repair. Remember: BREATHE!! It will work out. Perhaps a little differently than you initially hoped for and planned. This is where being flexible and willing to modify your plan(s) will help keep you sane and focused.

Distract yourself and the family.

Don't be afraid to have fun. If during the day the realtor, lender and construction company have all just frazzled your last nerve, take the evening and FORGET ABOUT IT!! Watch a movie. Go dancing. Let loose. Have fun. This is an exciting time in your life, let it be exciting. Celebrate!!
