Baby Boomers Living Longer But Not Healthier, Researchers Claim
Boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, stress importance of immediate action.
Online, March 8, 2013 (Newswire.com) - A recent study by researchers from West Virginia University School of Medicine and the Medical University of South Carolina compared data from two sets of responses to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The objective was to determine if baby boomers were living longer because they were healthier than the prior generation or simply benefiting from better medical treatments.
Although only 21.3 percent of boomers were smokers when they took the survey, compared with 27.6 percent for those in an older cohort, most responses show they have taken a turn for the worse. Only 13.2 percent of boomers rated their own health as "excellent," compared with 32 percent of their elders. They were more likely to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Among reporting boomers, 38.7 percent were obese compared with 29.4 percent of the older group. Today's boomers also had a slightly higher rate of cancer.
"Despite their longer life expectancy over previous generations, U.S. baby boomers have higher rates of chronic disease, more disability, and lower self-rated health than members of the previous generation at the same age," the study authors wrote.
"If you don't want to spend your last years in sickness, disability and immobility, you need to take immediate action whether you are a boomer or not," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "It is never too early or too late to make positive changes that will improve your health."
