Back Problems Can Be Linked to Diet, Say Experts
Weighing too little or too much, a poor diet, smoking and excess alcohol are all cited as being harmful to our spines.
Online, May 6, 2012 (Newswire.com) - More than 65% of adults are thought to experience back pain at some point in their life. This can be caused by inactivity, sitting too long, lifting something incorrectly, carrying something improperly or being overweight.
"Most bouts of back pain will usually go away after a couple of weeks. However, if you suffer from chronic back pain, you really need to make some changes to remedy the situation. This usually involves new diet and lifestyle choices," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).
"Your spine has a stack of 33 bones that stretches from the base of your skull down to your pelvis," adds Dian. "Over the years, our backs usually suffer some abuse resulting in wear and tear. Sports injuries, car accidents, falls, tension from stress or poor posture or loss of bone mass can all cause problems. A certain level of activity, fitness and lean body mass (muscles) are all requirements for a healthy back. Weighing too little or too much, a poor diet, smoking and excess alcohol are all cited as being harmful to our spines."
"Injuries or bone loss can weaken the vertebrae, resulting in breaks," adds Tom. "A broken vertebrae will put excessive pressure on your other vertebrae and the tissue between each one. Breaks or fractures can be caused by something like picking up your children or grocery bags and even coughing. They can cause pain anywhere along the spine and if one of your nerves gets pinched, it can result in extreme pain. Vertebral compression fractures are becoming more common with age. If you suffer from chronic or frequent back pain you need to find the cause and a trip to your doctor is in order."
