"The Sleeping Beauty" ballet is a timeless story of good versus evil. It is a ballet in a prologue and three acts, first performed in 1890. It has been performed by many of the major ballet companies of the world. As the story begins, the King anxiously awaits the birth of his only child. When his daughter is born, the King calls for a christening celebration to which all the fairies of the kingdom are invited to bestow their blessings on his daughter, Aurora.
As the fairies present their gifts of beauty, grace, generosity, song, and temperament, they are interrupted by the arrival of Carabosse; she is enraged and insulted that the King forgot to invite her to the ceremony. Carabosse announces her curse that Aurora will one day prick her finger and die. Luckily the Lilac Fairy has yet to give her present. She declares that although Aurora will prick her finger she will not die. Instead she will fall into a deep sleep from which she will be awoken after a hundred years by the kiss of a prince.
The original music was by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky. The score was completed in 1889, and was the second of his three ballets. The original scenario was conceived by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, and is based on Charles Perrault's La Belle au bois Dormant. The choreographer of the original production was Marius Petipa in 1890. The work is widely regarded as Tchaikovsky's finest ballet score, and has become one of the classical repertoire's most famous ballets.
Follow the journey of the young dancers as they portray the story of "The Sleeping Beauty" and the adventure and excitement along the way. Tickets are now on sale for $15 per adult and $12 per child and are available by calling the ballet school.
