Online, April 19, 2010 (Newswire.com) - COLUMBUS, OH-BalletMet Columbus has announced its 2010-2011 season, which features favorites from the company repertoire and BalletMet's first collaboration with Shadowbox, known for its sketch comedy, rock and roll and musical theater productions.
The season begins with Requiem!!, a provocative contemporary masterpiece by Birgit Scherzer that had its U.S. debut at BalletMet in 1997. Discover what lies beyond the mysterious open door, as Death and Man connect in a rhythmic dance of life. Winner of a Greater Columbus Arts Council Artistic Excellence Award, this dramatic production transports audiences with Mozart's Mass for the Dead, the power of which is unrelenting.
Next is the dramatic Dangerous Liaisons. Innocence is compromised with an illicit game of power and seduction in David Nixon's dance work, inspired by the risque 18th century French novel and 1988 film. Parisian aristocrats flirt with lust, love and revenge, with musical selections from The Four Seasons and other spirited concertos by Antonio Vivaldi.
The Nutcracker returns with live music and new scenery and costumes for Act I. Presented to 25,000 people annually at the majestic Ohio Theatre, BalletMet's production is one of Columbus' premiere holiday events. Co-conceived by Gerard Charles and Robert Post, this production offers an endearing story, a beloved score, recorded narration by Sir Roger Moore, and exciting dancing by more than 100 dancers, creating an unrivaled spectacular for all ages.
The shoe fits in Gerard Charles' romantic and charming Cinderella, a fairytale for the ages. With comical stepsisters, a fairy godmother and, of course, the all-important glass slipper, this fun production showcases the best of classical ballet with grand scenery, luxurious costumes, dreamy choreography and music by Alexander Glazunov that promises a happily ever after.
Step into spring with the action-packed BalletMet Up Close, in the BalletMet Performance Space. Audiences will feel the energy and intensity of movement and watch the dancers power through the diverse mix of new works from guest choreographers and BalletMet dancer Jimmy Orrante, plus Harrison McEldowney's hilarious Group Therapy.
The season ends with the ultimate rock and roll ballet, the world premiere 7 Deadly Sins, an original collaboration with Shadowbox. Anger, envy, gluttony, greed, lust, pride and sloth are on the menu with deliciously wicked choreography by artists including Dwight Rhoden (former dancer, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, director, Complexions Contemporary Ballet) and new compositions and arrangements performed live by Shadowbox's BillWho?.
