Basel's First Joint English Book Sale

Basel will be experiencing an exciting new event this week in the form of a joint English Book sale to be held on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12 at the Basel-West Library.

Basel's joint English Book sale involves a joint initiative between the American Women's Club, Centrepoint, the GGG Stadtbibliothek Basel West and the Anglican Church. Its success is thanks to the work of their many enthusiastic volunteers behind the scenes.

In the run up to the sale, the American Women's Club, Centrepoint, the GGG Stadtbibliothek Basel West and the Anglican Church have been encouraging donations of books, DVDs and CDs, which have been carefully sorted and catalogued. Books will be on sale for 2CHF, with discounts available for purchases of over six.

Light refreshments will also be offered. Among the English/American delicacies offered are home baked cookies and cakes as well as Bagels donated by BaselBagels.

"Many people may not be aware how attractive the English section in the public library has become," explained Christine Whitebread of the GGG Stadtbibliothek.

"This book sale is going to help us expand the range of books and audio books we can offer."

"We are expecting to have 10,000 books on sale this weekend", commented Donna Willis of the American Women's Club. "There will be mysteries, novels, travel guides, and children's books. Whatever your favorite genre, we'll have books to interest you. This is the perfect opportunity to try out some new authors."

"It is wonderful that organisations representing the different facets of the international and host communities can work together in this new and practical way", said Rev. Geoff Read of the Anglican Church.

"It has been a great experience to work with others who share the same vision for the international community in Basel," added Centrepoint's head of PR Faiz Kermani. "We hope this will be the first in a long series of Joint Spring Book Sales."
