Before Baby Boost™ Prenatal Vitamins from Sound Formulas to Contain More Vitamin D3

Sound Formulas, is improving the formula of its Before Baby Boost™ Prenatal Multiple, based on recent research, which shows the need for higher doses of Vitamin D3. The product will now contain 2000 IUs of D3.

Boulder, CO - Sound Formulas, makers of the unique, comprehensive three-bottle Before Baby Boost™ Prenatal Vitamin System is improving its formula based on clinical studies, so that the product will contain more Vitamin D3.

The current RDA for Vitamin D in pregnancy is 200-400 IU's per day. Yet numerous studies are showing that 2,000 to 4,000 IU's is what is needed of D3 (cholecalciferol) to help bolster the immune system, so given all the data coming forth about the importance of increased amounts of D, Sound Formulas has decided to raise it's Vitamin D3 levels from 200 IU's to 2,000 IU's.

Before Baby Boost™ with 2,000 IU's of Vitamin D is currently in production and will be available on the market in the fall 2010. "Just in time for flu season," says Stephanie Raffelock, the president and co-founder of the company. "We are always striving to stay up with the current nutritional research and make changes in our products where we believe it will be beneficial to our customers."

Vitamin D was highlighted in the news last fall and winter, when so many pregnant women were concerned about the H1N1 virus and vaccinating for that while pregnant. Research strongly suggests that Vitamin D can stimulate the production of certain immune peptides (proteins) that help the immune system ward off bacterial and viral infections. "There is a large and growing body of literature that points to Vitamin D as a key to preventing seasonal flu and swine flu," says Dr. Dean Raffelock, vice president in charge of research and development at Sound Formulas.

"Vitamin D is considered both a hormone and a vitamin. One of the most important functions of Vitamin D is to stimulate the absorption of calcium. Severe Vitamin D deficiencies can result in rickets in children. Rickets is characterized by softening of skull bones, bowing of legs, spinal curvature and increased joint size," he says. "There is also strong evidence that adding vitamin D3 to prenatal vitamins can help to prevent autism in children" adds Dr. Raffelock

In addition, Vitamin D has many anti-cancer properties and the latest research suggests that it may be very helpful in preventing breast, colon, and prostate cancer. Research now strongly suggests that Vitamin D helps to prevent many types of heart disease as well.

"Good natural sources of Vitamin D are cod liver oil, cold-water fish (mackerel, salmon, herring, etc.), egg yolks and butter. Dark leafy vegetables (collards, chard, kale, etc.) also contain a small amount of Vitamin D. And of course there is always a little sunshine to help boost your Vitamin D levels as well," says Dr. Raffelock.
