Beta LaserMike Demonstrates Non-Contact Length and Speed Encoder to Converters at ICE Europe

LaserSpeed encoder provides a more accurate measurement solution over contact-type methods, enabling converters to significantly increase productivity and quality

Munich, Germany - Beta LaserMike, a leading global provider of precision measurement and control solutions, will exhibit its LaserSpeed non-contact measurement system to converters at ICE Europe 2011 (Hall B6, Stand 456). This conference is located at the Munich Trade Fair Centre in Munich, Germany and runs from November 8 - 10. As visitors to the Beta LaserMike will see, the LaserSpeed® encoder helps converters accurately and consistently measure the length and speed of product during production.

"Laser-based length and speed measurements have become the standard measurement technology for many common converting applications," said Marcel Kloubert, Regional Sales Manager for Germany and Switzerland for Beta LaserMike. "For example, our LaserSpeed encoder is being used in paper, film, foil, and other material converting processes that involve continuous length measurement, cut control, post-cut length, differential speed, and position control, to name a few. As a result of the higher measurement accuracies and tighter process controls, converters are realizing a number of production efficiencies and bottom-line advantages."

The LaserSpeed measurement system is a direct replacement for error-prone mechanical contact encoders. It uses advanced, laser-based technology to precisely measure the length and speed of product during production without making contact with the web. This laser encoder projects a unique pattern on the surface of the product. As the product moves, light is scattered back to the LaserSpeed unit. This information is translated into product speed and pulses are produced to determine the product length, independent of shape, color, or texture. Length and speed measurements are captured with better than +0.05% accuracy, 0.02% repeatability. LaserSpeed has no moving parts and is permanently calibrated, reducing the need for routine adjustments and maintenance.

Beta LaserMike offers a complete line of LaserSpeed systems with measurement speeds up to12,000 m/min (39,400 ft/min) and down to the true zero speed, standoff distances up to 1000 mm (39.4 in), and measurement depth of field up to 100 mm (3.0 in). Beta LaserMike also offers a European certified length measurement system that meets MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) 2004/22/EG requirements.
