“Once we choose an organization, we create goals for how we’re going to support it,” Matthew explained. “Sometimes we host drives to collect goods. These are great because we have metrics we can measure and make sure we’re on track. When team members can see how close we are to goals, it motivates them to collect more.”

While drives are measurable, Matthew suggests that for maximum impact, he appreciates hands-on volunteer efforts. “There’s something to be said for rolling up your sleeves and doing work that directly benefits others,” he added. “Whether it’s working with kids, serving food to the hungry, or helping animals, it’s all good. Even the coldest heart melts when it comes to giving back to the community and helping those in need. It makes you realize how good your own life is. It puts trivial troubles in perspective.”

While the Better Advertising Professionals team’s philanthropic efforts certainly benefit charitable organizations, Matthew noted that his people are strengthened by these endeavors as well. “When you’re working together on a volunteer outing, you’re no longer director of operations, or branding experts, or whatever your role may be,” he explained. “The dynamics change and you start relating to each other just as people. It’s a very different, transformative experience that has a positive impact on overall bonds.”

Matthew indicated that because volunteering invokes such positive emotions, the experience influences the office’s overall culture. “You can’t deny the great feelings you get when you give back,” he said. “Therefore, it shouldn’t be a surprise that when you do it as a team, you associate the company with a sense of performing good deeds. It naturally carries over to the workplace.”

“Someone once told me that you receive more than you give when you donate to your community,” Matthew concluded. “I certainly believe this is true. I know my team does, too.”
