As we get so much more health aware of ourselves, it is time we take a careful look at the health and care of our pets. Black River Bullmastiffs has now added a large amount of content and articles on breed specific care and information on Bullmastiffs. There have been so many questions from the right food to how often to bathe. With this new release and more content being added weekly you should find the answers to the questions you have not been able to find an answer to.
At Black River I live a somewhat unconventional life; and I do not apologize for it. I have not chosen either of the two conventional methods of running a breeding program; one centered on the show ring or the other centered on the profit. I have set one goal for this endeavor; to breed strong healthy functional specimens of the bullmastiff that are true to the original intent of the breed. From years of affiliation with the Humane Society, I have experienced firsthand the unethical practices of exploiting animals for profit. Due to this; I vowed from the beginning that my establishment would be designed around the desire of happy lives' for all involved. At Black River Bullmastiffs, because I love and admire my bullies, I seek to utilize my kennel for the betterment of the breed; insuring a humane and happy environment of each dog in my care.
The following is an example of what you will find when you visit the site.
Dog dentures ? If you don't think so, then you need to be caring for those big bully bites. There is nothing less frightening to a intruder than a dog that threatens to gum its target. For the safety of your family it is important to maintain those sparkly whites. It is especially important to care for your bullies teeth as they age. If you want your bully to be a willing partner in this endeavor start when they are young, thus they will grow up accustomed to the cleaning procedure. Your vet will most likely advise you to brush the dog's teeth on a daily basis. You should be able to find special dog toothbrushes as well as special dog toothpaste in most stores that carry pet supplies or magazines that carry dog supplies. When first starting to brush you will want to get your bully used to the taste of the toothpaste by dabbing some on a cotton swab and rubbing it on the teeth. Most dog toothpaste is made with tasty flavors will beef or chicken. After your dog is used to the cotton swab, switch to a finger brush. Once that slobbering big baby is an adult you can then switch to a dog toothbrush. Brushing is important in the prevention of dental disease and to lower the risk of dental tartar. Brushing also frees any debris your dog may have on or between the teeth from chewing on objects or bones. You can make your dental care a regular part of how you interact with your dog on a daily basis much like what you do when you play with the dog. It is also important to provide your dog with plenty of chewing exercise. Rawhide chews; especially those that are designed for teeth care are beneficial for your dog. There are even rawhide chews that are made with a special enzyme that helps to prevent plaque buildup. Dogs still need a regular visit to the vet each year as part of their healthy lifestyle and a professional teeth cleaning will likely be a part of the healthy lifestyle plan at your vet's office. During this exam your dog's teeth will be examined to see if any teeth require pulling or repair. The vet will also polish the teeth during this procedure. If your dog does need to have teeth pulled your vet will likely put your dog on a course of antibiotics to avoid infection.
